Aside from the AR or AK, what is your favorite home defense carbine

"Barnbwt has no need for loved ones." :D
Seriously, in what universe is your carbine worth more than a few hours of lawyering? Min your horsehoe nails, people. If a carbine is what works best, use it regardless.

That said, I'd likely not use my STGW57 or other homebuilt gun; lots of nostalgaic value and won't look nice in front of a judge should the need arise.

Guys, there are places where guns have been seriously messed up in evidence lockers, case numbers engraved with electric pens, left to rust, etc. Hopefully that will never happen to your firearm, but still a weapon of little personal value is the best to use, if THAT event occurs.

My Rock-Ola is down the list for this reason. I have an SU16 and now an AK for defense, if needed.

That is a good point Shep854 regarding sentimentality, normally I don't give a hoot about the "it will rot in evidence" argument, but I would not use a sentimental or collectible M1 Carbine for HD. I wouldn't hesitate to use a $2k plus AR that is better suited. If it rots in evidence after saving our lives, so be it.

I don't believe a center fire carbine to be a home defense weapon unless I lived alone, with no close neighbors. I've got a winchester 1600 semi auto 16 gauge I cut the barrel down on. It's what sits next to my door. I've got it loaded with some #4 buck shot
Ditto that ... I did post some pictures of some options however they would only come out of the safe if there were some sort of major natural disaster ... or ... Zombie Apocalypse :)

In reality, on my side of the bed is a 22 mag ... a couple 45's and a couple shotguns located strategically around the house any one of which should get me to my safe ... hopefully the need never arises.

Well, my only carbine other than my Saiga is a 10/22. Yeah, its mag is loaded and ready for critters big and small, but so are all the others.

.
Favorite HD carbine (not a shotgun or a handgun...), and, why?

Of the five lever guns I own, I'd choose the Rossi 92 in .357
Another one I'd use but I'd have to buy it first is a Rossi 92 in .44 16".

It's 16" barrel makes it superlight and very handy.(a 20" barreled lever is still! shorter than a pump shotgun wearing it's 18.5" barrel).

It is easily replaceable, unlike a Marlin 1894 or a Browning 92 (although I'd have to 'smith on another one with an action slickin' and springs).

I just don't know whether to use 158 gr JSP or 180 for personal defense. It's a great plinker with jacketed ball.

Mech-Tech carbine top on a .45 1911. I use 11-round mags. It's accurate and very fast. I've since added a recoil pad to my homemade steel stock. It's really a very fun gun to shoot!

That is one opinion.
At that one defining moment, I want the gun that I shoot best, not the cheapest, not the one I would least mind seeing taken away.

I only have one life. I want to live to see that gun taken away... and maybe returned later. I'll deal with its condition then.

If I do not survive the encounter, none of the other stuff matters.

Weellll, next to the AR and the 870 is my 3rd choice. Marlin 1894c in .357. The 26" 45/70 1895cb next to that is not a carbine.... but I bet it would do in a pinch.

my Romanian SKS sure isn't reliable.

Certainly not every SKS is reliable but they have a great reputation for being reliable. Most of them work very well. There are examples around that are totally messed up from being shot hard and never cleaned too. No platform is perfect. But my SKS has been crazy reliable for the past 20+ years. I had the Yugo too and it worked perfect but I understand people can have problems with the gas tube on those. That's what I hear anyway.

#1 Inland M1 carbine (without sticker) loaded with Winchester JHP's.

#2 Winchester Wrangler Carbine .44 magnum with 16" barrel and 34.25 AOL. Williams receiver sight with twilight aperture & Lyman gold bead front sight. Loaded with 240 grain Hornady XTP hand loads.

I have an M1 Carbine from 1943. Perfect size for home defense and decent round at short range. Plus, it's WWII!

My M44 is pretty handy and has a bayonet. Its very reliable and with no neighbors with in range the most over penetration would do is hit a cow. Of course I would need ear plugs and sun glasses for the flash and bang!

Anyone springing for a SIG MPX now that they are supposedly shipping? SBR and suppressed, would be quite compelling as a defense carbine.

I keep thinking about a K-T Sub2000 in 9mm. For close urban dwelling, this should give adequate touch, without as much risk of punching neighbors.

Russian SKS... My first centerfire rifle x 20 yrs .

Remington 870 12 gauge with RS improved cylinder barrel.

1894 44mag 10 shot. Good for people or black bear.

As for the point about a gun sitting in evidence locker, I don't think they are saying to not defend yourself because the gun would be seized. I think most of us have a choice of guns You may want to leave the $500 gun next to the bed rather then the 2000, if they both do the same job. No one is telling you to let your wife be raped, to save the finish on your gun. That is a personnel choice.
