Aside from the AR or AK, what is your favorite home defense carbine

A 12 ga. doesn't count as a carbine, so I'd say this; Whatever is in my hands when I need it. The only carbine I own besides my AK is a Type 53 Mosin. Bettern' nothin.

My sister and her family like their Marlin Camp carbine in 9mm.

Interesting. The VZ58 is considered a carbine?
Shot one on Tuesday. Yeah, it's a carbine. It's smaller than an AK. Too small for my meat hooks. I like the rifle, didn't care for the furniture at all. Pistol grip leave my pinky hanging into space. Fore end was small and I kept burning my hand on the gas/ piston block.

Really, a Thompson? Technology has improved in the SMG sector since a hundred years ago...;)

Highpower,

Very nice TSMG. 1928A1? One of my buds picked up a 28 shortly after he turned 21 and the gang did a lot of reloading of .45ACP as a result.

I would think 13 rounds of .45 ACP in one second might just work for home defense.

Oh yeah and how I seemed to have missed a thread with the word "carbine" I do not know.

I have used a bunch of stuff but my favorite bump in the night carbine is a Carbine US M-1 .30.

I even have some GI mags still in the wrap so no mag worries.

If you have any interest at all in military surplus or style firearms, consider some of the lesser-known options.

The semiauto PPSh41s and Suomis are climbing in price lately, but they're handy 7.62x25 or 9mm carbines, 30 rounds with the stick magazine, 72 with the drum. They're heavy by modern standards, which translates to low recoil, and their simple blowback design means there's little to go wrong.

The Uzi carbines are smaller, lighter, and can be had in the default 9x19, or in .45 ACP or .41 Action Express for more punch. Prices are surprisingly reasonable.

The layout of the PPS43 means that they're unwieldly long with a legal 16" barrel... but they're so cheap that even a brand new one plus a $200 NFA tax stamp would still be cheaper than some of the guns mentioned upthread, and with the short barrel and folding stock they're much more useful in close quarters. You can buy new semis in 7.62 or 9mm.

SKS with a fix 20 round box magazine would be my first pick. Potent caliber and capacity, simple to use, and quite reliable.

Stepping up in caliber next to a bit of overkill, I'd have to go with other battle rifles like the FAL or M1A.

Next a tie between the M1 carbine, the .30-30 lever gun, M1 garand.... dunno after that.

The Uzi carbines are smaller, lighter, and can be had in the default 9x19, or in .45 ACP or .41 Action Express for more punch. Prices are surprisingly reasonable.

I have an Uzi carbine... it's not light nor reasonably priced. A decent Uzi costs a grand and it'll weight 10 pounds loaded.

As for a weapon in long-term evidence lockers to rust and get stenciled, if you're weapon is in evidence long-term, you've got a 6 $ figure problem much larger than your $1000-2000 weapon.

FN FAL Para

My favorite by far is my DSA built Congo Para, 18" barrel, steel lower, very small package, accurate and very easy to shoot.

The Thompson wins the prize, what a beauty and it is still as formitible a weapon as 100 years ago. It is heavy, especially with a vest full of mags, but that was lost in the confidence the weapon presented "when going in harms way". My Carbines include many, many GI Carbines and a slick Spanish Destroyer carbine using 9mm Largo cartridges.
