Aside from the AR or AK, what is your favorite home defense carbine

Home defense I'd prolly opt for my M1 carbine or Mini 14 as my first choice, but to be real honest I'd sleep just fine with a lever by my side and have. I still rely mostly on shotguns for HD and will until recoil starts becoming a problem for me to control

Who relies on "general quality" for ANY defensive magazine?
Unless a particular magazine has been tested and found reliable in YOUR weapon, with the ammunition YOU intend to keep in it, it shouldn't even be considered for defensive use.

"Brand New" in the wrapper 60+ year old USGI mags are still available along with new, better than original magazine springs from Wolff.

At 25 bucks a pop, the mags linked below are crazy expensive, but if I didn't already have a number of USGI 15's, and 30's, I'd buy at least a couple of 'em.
The best rifle in the world will be an unreliable POS with poor quality magazines.

You don't need a footlocker full of cheap $10.99 magazines for a home defense carbine.

You just need a few really good ones.

I would love a G.I. M1 Carbine, but right now my Tula Arsenal Russian SKS will have to do.

A NOrinco SKS with 16 barrel and 20 rd fixed mag is hard to beat. Thats the favorite of militias back in the 1990s.

M1 Carbine.

I don't have anything better without muzzle threads.

Good round, dead reliable, nice mag options.

Of course (some would say foolishly) I do not anticipate night time, running gun battles with armor clad cartel operatives necessitating suppressors, night vision and lasers.

Just a reliable gun, just a reliable trigger finger...

Todd.

It's funny you mention this. I tend to look at firearms and assess their strengths and weaknesses, then maintain the strong points while addressing the shortcomings.

The .30 carbine round will already defeat IIIA armor; add an Ultimak rail, RDS and light (or IR laser) and the low light target ID and aiming is taken care of, and it can go back to GI configuration in a few minutes.

The M1 Carbine properly set up wouldn't give up anything in a modern HD scenario to an AR (except a suppressor, got me there ;)).

+1 on magazine quality. My Ruger runs great with factory mags or PMI, but no other aftermarket mags have worked very well.

$25 for a "new" proprietary magazine isn't really all that out of line.
Well these are not "new" or "proprietary" mags, they're 70+ year old military surplus that have been standard issue for a number of different militaries around the world.

I've also got a couple of shoe boxes full of 'em, none of which I paid more than five bucks apiece for (and that was for the 30's).

$25 apiece seems expensive to me, but as I said, I'd still pay it if I was in need of good, reliable mags for an M1 Carbine, particularly if I was betting my life and my family's lives on the weapon.

No rifle is any better than it's magazine.

I'm seriously considering Armalite AR-180B. With shorter plastic magazine (often called the tanker) it should make for affordable HD rifle.

My Hi-Point model 995 9mm

I'm wanting one of those. :) One local GS has one each in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 acp.

9mm would be my preference with the .40 second choice. Problem is the owner is asking slightly higher than Hi-Point's suggested retail price for them. Lots available on Gun Broker though.

Wow ... this thread is still going!

How about a IWI Tavor? 16" barrel bull-pup

... or a Bushmaster ACR? It looks long but that's a 16" barrel, and it can fire with the stock folded.

Mini 30 and .300 BLK AR for wife and me (I am assuming AR as .223/5.56).

What can I say, I like .30 caliber bullets! :D (I also reload .308)

I also have Just Right carbine with 45/40/9 caliber option with Glock magazines for our teenage daughter.

Steyr AUG A3, when I can afford one. All the advantages of a .223 in a more compact package, with better weight distribution.
