History Channel's "Top Shot" on Sunday night

I have to admit since the teams were disbanded, the shooting became more interesting. Some of those shots do look like they would be fun to try. Breaking windows with the slingshots could have been a hoot.

Wonder what tweaks they'll do with the format of Top Shot 2?

We all have our ideas of what worked, didn't work this time around.

Better background on the weapons used (or at least CGI--the CGI of the guns was as bad as Timothy Hine's War of the Worlds movie).

I like the idea suggested above about having R. Lee Ermey as host (next cry baby gets a box of tissues thrown at him).

  1. If Sig Sauer, Glock, S+W, et al aren't burning up the phone lines to get their products on this show, they're morons. Over two million people watch this show each week, I'd be willing to bet that doesn't amount to an entire season's audience for any other shooting show on TV.
  2. Did anyone besides me notice that aside from a Gander Mountain spot or two, there was a complete lack of shooting-related ads? Whether or not that's because of History Channel's rates or the fact that nobody know what the ratings would be before it aired, I don't know. And Gander Mountain's spots were wasted on me out here in Arizona: I don't think there's a store of theirs within a thousand miles of me.
  3. No more TZ-99/SVT-40/whatintheheckisTHATgundoingontheshow: Stick with what people actually own, please. (And shoot CZ's all the time instead of Berettas and TZ-99's. But that's just me. :) )
  4. They really need to split up the teams better at the start. Blue team dominated the competitions because top-to-bottom they had more shooters who had shot under the pressure of competition.
  5. Caleb's already got a deal because of the show, and if I were Iain, Chris, JJ, Pete or Kelly, I'd look to capitalize on my fifteen minutes as much as I could with endorsements, personal appearances and speaking out in favour of worthwhile causes.
  6. Let's face it, the drama llama brings in viewers. The producers did it right: They started out with the personalities to give us the faces and heels, and then moved on to the shooting so we could root for our heroes and jeer our villians.
  7. And one more thing to make the show more fun - Two words: Full auto.

I think a more verse variety of firearms would be cool for the next season. No need to come back to the same pistol or same rifle several times.

I thought the ending where it gave a little update on everybody's going on's was cool.

Sad to see Kelly then Pete and finally J.J. eliminated but at least they went out competing strongly.
Never expected Chris and Ian to be the final 2 but both did good work throughout so they earned it.

Colby really screwed Kelly in previous episode making the comment "How many rounds to load is an important part of tactics" just after Kelly made first shot after loading more than one round.

I loved the end credits when they were updating what the competitors were doing now - Brad is learning to shoot a different pistol, not a Glock. I don't think he'll ever live that down.

There were Viagra ads. Clearly us firearms enthusiasts are compensating for something. :D

I was happy to see Ian take the win, of all the competitors he was one of my favorites from day one. Not only a skilled shooter but a great attitude as well.

Overall I think the final four turned out to be a great group of guys, I would have been happy to see any of them win in the end.

This turned out to be a great show, I'm really looking forward to Season 2 now!

I thought that the finale was great. Interestingly enough, a lot of the non-shooting guys I've spoken with since really enjoyed all of the competition instead of the drama. It's got to be quite a predicament for the producers for next season. Drama is necessary because nobody wants to watch a pure shooting competition. Hell, I even think it would be kinda boring! The personalities keep people involved in who wins, but we'll have to see if they're going to take the same route as the Ultimate Fighter, where people clash, but they settle it via a skills test, not necessarily one determined by voting. I suppose it just depends on how they view the majority of their audience. Focus group testing will tell the tale...

Oh and yes, after the Steel Challenge, I'll be switching to my new CZ SP01 Shadow. Better ergonomics. I'll write up something on it here this week.

Great finale. I don't know about the no drama concerns. The last 2 shows had plenty of drama and none of the "rat fink" type crud. You had a group of good guys, all competing and being men about it.

Personally I would like to see them pull more "weird"' guns out like how about a S&W Model 500 magnum or something weird like that. Get some guys doing precision shoots with one of those. That would be interesting to see how the pros would handle weapons like that.

They could do some real weird stuff and pull out some extremely old historical weapons (like they did with the kentucky long rifle).

I nearly stopped watching after the rat fink crud. However, they finished real strong after that.

Top Shot

They finally came through with a great show. For season 2 I would like to see different guns and include the "snub nose".

The finale was fun to watch.

For all the threads of all those wanna bees wanting "1000 yard" rifles for those 1000 yard hunting and sniping shots they plan to make, did you see these guys miss a beer pitcher at 100 yards standing, and the number of rounds they had to shoot to hit the 100 yard and 300 yards targets with M14's?

Thinking about a little more this morning...

  1. Shotguns! Shotguns were used in only one elimination round competition, far too infrequently for how popular they are. Maybe mix in some trap, skeet or clays in the next series.
  2. The show needs a "resident expert", someone to set up each shot and explain the possible strategies the competitors might use, something like role Dr. Hattori had on the original Iron Chef. For instance, casual viewers might not know why JJ used the sling on his rife last night.

I loved the end credits when they were updating what the competitors were doing now
That was a nice touch-methinks they copied NFL Films Superbowl Champion series (not a bad thing), minus some good music. The Superbowl Champion series does the same thing at the end of each show-most folks probably enjoy a quick few lines to let them know what the participants have been up to since their win/loss.

I had a feeling when they got to the final 3- JJ would struggle with the accuracy part. He's a speed shooter. He brutalzed chris in the plates, but shooting a 8" glass with a schoefield one hand at 50 yds is friggin tough.I also think it was a brilliant move to pick the da revolver for the beer mug shot. Again not in jj's forte.

I'm not at all surprised Ian won. Chris gave it a great try though. I think the show finished strong with the last two episodes.

Was also interesting that the contestants seemed to want it settled by shooting rather than playing the reality show game.

Iain had two points and was safe, Chris had one, JJ had none.

If Chris had set up his shot to be either a gimme or an impossible one to force a tie with JJ - he would've guaranteed himself a spot in the finale.

I would hate to see it become sponsored by a gun manufacturer. Don't want it to become an ad-whore suckfest.
I've been watching 3 Gun Nation on VS and thoroughly enjoy the fact that it's a giant FN / SureFire commercial... YMMV.

Also, for season 2 I'd definitely like to see them switch up the weapons. While they did have a good variety, there are so many weapons out there that people would like to see used on the show.

Shooting USA is almost entirely gun commercials during the break, but it doesn't make the show a suckfest.
PD TV does that job on its own, regardless of the commercials.

I would like to see some IDPA "type" stages, that would be fun and educational for non-shooters to see. Maybe a Law Enforcement vs Military season... I hope they maintain professional, non mall ninja types as competitors too. It would be bad to show the dark side on TV like that.

Great season finale last night! I really thought JJ will go all the way , I guess you win some you loose some,Ian performed very well and I was surprised how well chris performed too,I know he has the skills but man out lasting JJ is a tough thing to do,It came down to who can get off the last shot quicker at the end, Congrats to Ian can't wait for season 2 hopefully we see a 1911,a snub nose,M1 carbine and lever action rifle and some compound bows too in one of the challenges..My wife like the show too and she is not really in to guns..

I enjoyed this show except for the rat-fink era. I don't mind the drama as it brings in a broader audience, as long is it is kept in check.

And a bigger variety of guns would definitely spice things up. More shooting on the move also. And amen to keeping the mall ninjas off the show, they make America look bad, not just shooters.:neener:

And exactly why I will probably stop watching it. For the same reason I don't read G&A or Shooting Times any more. Nothing but ads and shameless plugs.

Which is still a good show. The fact that they're sponsored by Midway doesn't seem to hurt them much but then again, we don't have the same firearms manufacturer being constantly rammed down our throats. We just have to look at that goofball Larry Potterfield every five minutes. Unlike 3 Gun Nation, they have something for everyone, not just FN fans.

Most hunting shows are the same way, which is why I completely disregard them.
