If You Could Only Have One Carry Piece For the Great Outdoors, Woods, Mountains, etc. What Would it Be

FALs:
BreechFace, you might know all of this and far more than I seem to grasp. I attempted to describe this to help any lurkers and/or novices with FALs.

Both of my Imbel upper receivers were the foundation for my already-complete SAR-4800 and Century L1A1 Sporter rifles. Note that many Century L1A1 Sporters used a true Century receiver (vs. Imbel or other import), and possibly for some R1 Sporters?
A further confusion is that many Imbel uppers have no markings with the word Imbel, nor the "Gear Logo" symbol. Only with a certain 108*** (+) :scrutiny:serial # range does one know that this 'flavor' of Upper is an Imbel. Crazy.

I've done little with tools during my life, and frankly have not had the self-confidence to learn how to build a FAL.
By the way, apparently some Imbel uppers were imported as separate components. Not all of of them were part of complete rifles (ie the 'post-ban' SAR-4800).

Here is the rifle, and this Netflix movie depicts a true story.

Saw a Valmet O/O 6.5x55 12 gauge that I would have picked......
Lots of bbls offered for the Valmet's,

Well, I've already wondered around for days on end with my "one gun" keeping me fed,

KD06S.jpg

and I already know it works perfectly on all the small game, deer, bear and of course moose,

Interior-Moose-Hunt.jpg

and at 7 pounds it's not too big a deal to carry around for days on end.

These days, the only big game I care to hunt is deer, and my "walk around" gun does that job great, every year too,

2010-Nov-Does-S.jpg

and it's been doing THAT job since the "80's when it came to live with me.

Drillings with rimfire einstecklaufs installed do everything with Class.:cool:

Alright. But think about being outside your own subset. Think about being in Montana, Alaska or the Yukon. It could happen!

What would your choice(s) be then?

Think outside the box..😚
Why? I am operating in my box, not someone else's. I see no need to speculate until I go to a different box.

Except for being heavy, these were amazing guns. Back in the day I had a 412 (the nicer version) with SST and a 412S (the plain version) with DT, and I had one of every barrel set they made in the second version, much better than the earliest for scope mounting. My last gun of the 412 type was a 512 in 12/9.3X74R Tikka barrels and 9.3X74r/9.3X74R Lothar Walther barrels.

I could never afford to have all of them at the same time and did a lot of selling and trading to get to try every one over about five years' time.

The earlier Valmet variant in a Savage 2400 12/308 with a 22 LR insert for the 12ga barrel would be a good less expensive choice, IMO.

In all practicality I believe an Ithaca 37 12ga with an IC 22" or 24" barrel with open sights would be a great choice. It's a fast handling bird gun, and an IC barrel shoots foster slugs well.

Also, the grand old 37 is a light weight and dependable gun that's affordable.

I would say it would be my first choice for this particular purpose.

I still have a Savage 2400, Almost every 412 I sold, I installed double triggers on it, that's the one thing I had against the 2400. (single trigger)

Anyway, I'm the one who got Valmet to machine the shotgun bbls. for the Valmet quick detach scope mount, they originally didn't come cut that way.

I also converted the guns to non-auto safety too, many like me, don't like an auto safety on my firearms.

A few other things too...

BTW, I still have some custom bbls. that were never sold to the public.

I have two choices both of which shall come from my personal collection (since it only makes sense to me to plan based upon what is on hand) and shall be based upon two different hypothetical scenarios. If this is carrying the gun under normal circumstances in normal life I suppose it would be my Taurus 66 .357. that being said if this is a situation where there has been some sort of disaster or social collapse in which I am to wander for the sake of survival then my 12 gauge 26 inch improved cylinder 870 wingmaster. Only because in normal life I feel like the odds are so that I need only personal protection . Where as in a survival situation my shotgun can feed me and protect me as needed with bird shot, buck shot or slugs. It's imp cyl barrel has taken many a squirrel with fine shot for me and before I owned it my best friends old man took many deer with buck shot when it was his gun. I've personally shot a small pumpkin at 50 yards with a foster slug out of it. Closest thing to an all purpose gun there is.

Easy, Holy Grail, good for any situation.

I haven't found that yet or many situations a savage 24 hasn't solved, that was not task specific.

I had a set of 300 H&H barrels and sold them too cheap. My favorites were 12ga/30-06, 12/9.3X74R, and O/U 9.3X74R with their auto ejectors, and I converted my personal guns I obtained to keep to DT. Of all the ones I had I vastly preferred the DT Tikka 512. I had a set of 375 Win barrels that I loaded for with extra heavy loads with never a problem.

After Don of Cape outfitters died here in Reno I contacted Jeff Mayfield after a respectable period of time and bought all the scope mounts they had, and I bought Numrich out of theirs and their wood. I wish I had bought all their 9.3 barrels sets, 12/9.3 and o/u 9.3, but I have always gotten by on limited funds. Somewhere I also have a couple of the fragile rear sight blades; I got all Jeff had.

It was a lot of fun setting up a bunch of the Valmets. They just didn't catch on here in the USA.

My 2400 12/308 has a cheaper mate in a 300 series in 12/222. I had several but gifted a couple to ranchers who were good enough to invite me onto their property to hunt. They love them as coyote guns. I also had a couple of 12/22HP guns and several hundred 70gr .227 bullets, but the last went to a local good friend for a buddy price. I found that in the 300 series all barrels seemed to fit all guns well. My 12/26" and 28" barrels and 12/various 22 barrels all fit the 2400 and vice-versa.

One feature of the 2400 and Lion series is they take traditional Sako mounts that can be used as QD mounts and are light weight.

I often put the 12/308 set into my lesser grade 300 series 12/222 DT receiver and wood for rough hunts. I really enjoyed hearing about your early Valmets! 🤓

I have a 412 combo bbl. set in 5.6x52R (22 Hi-power) x 12 ga., that came in to pass around to the press before the 412's were announced here in the US.

As for .227" bullets for the Hi-power, I have swage dies and swage press', and can make my own bullets in what ever weight I want.

Semi auto G19, wheel gun .41 mag, rifle 308, and a 12 of course. Wouldn’t hesitate to carry any of those in the woods.

My thoughts are it would be somewhat of a survival situation, like say your plane goes down in the middle of nowhere and you have to trek out 80 miles, or wait 3-4 months for rescue. I think here, I'd go with a Winchester 94 carbine in 30-30, 2 bandoliers of 30-30 ammo, with a small cleaning kit to go with it. And I'll take a TRC Apocolypse knife with a small set of India stones to sharpen it.

If it is 1 gun to hunt North America, then it'll be a Remington 870 with 28" vent rib barrel, iron sighted and smooth bore barrel for slugs, and rifled and scoped barrel for sabot slugs (which will include home cast lee slugs - I'm going to need the gun and barrels/bullet mould now and plenty of time to work up good loads before we go hunting).

If it's 1 gun for general self defence and woods bumming in the wilds, but not survival or hunting as it's specific function, I'll go with my Ruger Blackhawk 44 Special. Though it's very tempting to go with the Single Six for carrying plenty of ammo.
