Maybe you do not understand that there are opinions other than yours.

Got a question.... I'm not knocking people who sporterize their old mil-sup guns, but WHY do you do it? After one goes through the trouble to change the stock, add a scope, maybe change the barrel, etc... you are left with a gun that, I assume, is still not as good (accurate) as a modern hunting rifle.

Its fun to tinker and really customize something to make it yours. Could you just buy a normal Remington 700 or a Savage? Sure, and it would be great. On the other hand, some people like to work on something and make it really feel like theirs. Not all change the stock (I'm not a big fan of it, I like the original wood) and few change the barrel, though the UK59 barrels are durned accurate. Not as accurate? Honestly, that is debatable. A gun is only as accurate as its shooter. You can be as accurate as you need to be for hunting and for paper with a mil-surp rifle, and part of the enjoyment is working to get it even more accurate.
Sometimes the trip is just as fun as the destination, if you get my drift :)

I can only speak for what I have done. I like original rifles but also like some custom stuff (like I enjoy orginal Musclecars/modified and Street Rods). Done right, they can be very accurate. I did a modified Mosin myself that shoots sub MOA with 40 year old surplus ammo. That's almost as good as my new Savage. It took some trial and error to get there but it was fun and a challenge, which I enjoy.

Anybody can go out and buy an accurate rifle off the shelf, some like me enjoy the challenge of the process.

the one i have does not do very well. at 80 yards we were shooting homemade spinners they were about 6"X 6" and we didn't hit it at all we hit close but never heard the ping of steel

It's like early Christmas at my house today, and nothing says Happy Holidays like a case of surplus Russian ammo! Now have to wait almost a week to shoot it. :(

Just joined the club!

Bought a 91-30 from Classic Arms and brought it home from the FFL today. Bore looks good and it headspaces correctly. Swallows a "Go Gauge" but not a "Go Gauge" with 2 layers of tape. So next step is to degrease it. Pictures will follow.

Its a 1943. Will try to figure out the arsenal in the morning.

I am looking forward to cleaning it up and seeing how it shoots.

Got my first M39!

So I just got my first & only Mosin Finnish M39 in the mail today. It has a 1896 receiver, so I got it sent directly to me! The barrel is from 1941.

I know that the Finnish did things a bit different than the Russians, so based on that, can anyone tell me which of the available ammo is the most accurate in an M39? Light ball, heavy ball, 203gr Brown Bear, etc.

I know there is cheap corrosive stuff available, and I am not adverse to buying some, but if it can't hit the broad side of a barn I don't mind buying something more expensive. So without trying any and all styles out there, can anyone narrow the choices down for me? :)

Valnar - the 'cheap corrosive stuff' is all there really is. Beware of companies/people selling 'non-corrosive' ammo as I don't believe any really exists (that is/was mass produced)

+1 for the Mosin Nagant club.

Yes, if you're talking about milsurp, but the commercially-produced stuff -- Brown Bear, Silver Bear, S&B, etc. -- is all non-corrosive. AFAIK, no commercial producers nowadays are making corrosive ammo.

Mosin Sight Question

I found that the rear sight does not move (range adjustment). It feels like the right button is half way in and something is keeping the sight from moving when I attempt to adjust the range on it. The slider springs back to the 100 meter position. I think that either some cosmoline got inside or something is broken. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Yep, I'm aware of the different options (mil-sup corrosive, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, etc). Does anyone know which works best?

Prvi Partisan is non-corrosive and has reloadable brass cases. It's excellent stuff, very accurate. Yes, it's more expensive (about $13-15 per box online). I bought 200 rounds and reloaded the brass when I shot it all up. It may not be worth it for the average 91/30 but it's great in my M39. Mine likes the 180 grain, but I've never tried the 150 in it.

You may not want to go with the CHEAPEST set up there, alot of complaints about the low end ones. There are some good ones available, s&k makes the only one ive used tho, and on my 91/30 i used .22 rings on the dovetail under the sight. Took some work to get it right but they do well now.

As for ammo, i was given some 80rnds of surplus steel cased stuff. It all fired just fine, but groups ran in the 5-6" mark. I shoot only handloads now as its cheaper then the surplus ammo, and i only ever shoot 40-60 rnds a trip from my nagant. Accuracy is running about 1.5 for best groups, with a 4x pistol scope mounted out on the tube.....i cant HOLD a 4x scope much more consistently then 1.5" at 100yds lol.

The partizan IMHO is the best stuff.....and when looking at other center fire ammo is not that expensive.

The 150gr partizan is all I shoot in my PSL and my SVT40, and I save all I can find as I reload it also.

The regular 91/30's I will feed the surplus stuff, but you can see a difference with the the partizan, and then again if you load your own.

Fun stuff....I can't wait for spring.

For the love of god, don't get an ATI mount. The bolt mod is horrible, and unless you have a competent gunsmith, the scope mount will rip itself off of the receiver from the recoil.
The ATI forward mount of the D&T receiver mount?

Are you D&T'ing in your garage, or did you have a competent gunsmith D&T your receiver and mount the scope?

FWIW, the bolt handle mod is pretty much worthless.

Refinish a M39?

My M39 has a post war stock and it looks generally unfinished. I am not a wood expert, but would like to make sure it doesn't get too brittle or dry. I'm not after ruining the value of the M39, nor am I after a total bubba rework.

What is something I can do to lightly finish or oil the stock so it is better protected against my fingers, the elements, etc? Can you point me to any sites which explain a benign process I can apply?
