By far the humble little .22, then 30-30, .308, 30-06. I don't know why some folks have to always start out by saying .22's are great for beginners, (they are!), but hell, they're great for ANYONE!
I think the .45-70 is a great, affordable plinking round for shooting old pop cans in my back yard. In the suburbs.
For heavy duty use, I prefer to use my winchester-licensed lever-action air rifle. Very powerful. You can get a 4.5mm FMJ sailing at a full 300fps from that mutha!!
