US Capitol Police
Mission

Today's United States Capitol Police officer has the primary responsibility for protecting life and property; preventing, detecting, and investigating criminal acts; and enforcing traffic regulations throughout a large complex of congressional buildings, parks, and thoroughfares. The Capitol Police has exclusive jurisdiction within the United States Capitol Grounds and has concurrent jurisdiction with other law enforcement agencies, including the United States Park Police and the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, in an area of approximately 200 blocks around the complex. Additionally, they are charged with the protection of members of Congress, officers of Congress, and their families throughout the entire United States, its territories and possessions, and the District of Columbia.

Essentially confirms what I said, no?

Weren't there two White House officials that were "contempted" by Congress during the Bush#2 years? ...legal council Miers and the cheif of staff in 2008 come to mind. This related to the firings of federal judges, I think.

...anyway, nothing happened to them; right? Congress can investigate all they want, but they have no power (other than the power to impeach the president) to enforce laws or punish folks, that I am know about. ...that is the sole descretion of the judicial branch of the federal government and they are not about to indict their own leader - Eric WithHolder.

If Holder and Obama resist further, Congress should provide immunity to former AG Gonzolez who would likely spill the beans since this project began during his tenure.

Obama just stuck his neck out, probably for nothing...

Ultimately enforcement requires the use (or possibility) of force. Congress has no ability to apply physical force. Only the Executive branch does. Holder, as Obama's appointee and chief enforcer, would have to use force against himself to compel compliance.

Extraordinary Rendition? Los Islas Marias might be nice this time of year....

The House Government Oversight and Reform Committee has voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress by a 23-17 vote.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced that they will bring the contempt resolution to a vote in the full House next week unless Holder hands over the documents regarding Operation Fast and Furious.

Holder slammed Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chairman of the committee, following the vote:

....the committee vote was 100% partisan with all GOP voting to site contempt and all democrates voting against .....

UHG - here we go again ....

This is really a nothing event since Congress is powerless to remove, punish or sanction him in any way. ...more or less a non-event.

It must be a slow news day.

So, now it's just to see which way this falls and who's making hay,
I wonder if the dems think they can get sympathies for themselves with this

Were I a political strategist I would have the Murdered BP agents wives and family out working the press right now, so the 6 o'clock new has the family's response of 'I hope this is a stet in the right direction to find out what really happened to my love one' response to counter the Obammy 'the racist are after me again' BS

(Oh, and go read the Holder and white house responses, they are the ones who have implied if not out right stated that Issa and Grassley are racist)
-Actually they can order the capital police to hold Holder, much like a judge, for the contempt charge.

They could impeach Holder, and if the Senate finds him guilty they throw him out of office. (just like the president.)

Or they can lock him up until he complies with the subpoena or the session of congress ends, whichever happens first.

Or they can do nothing, which is what I suspect will happen.

I question why the dems would support the turd
he and his department KNOWINGLY not just broke, but tap danced on the laws
and they walk without so much as a 'bad job'?

WHAT THE HELL
I remember before this broke, there were rumors that Obammy was going to try to ram through new gun regs before Pelosi and the lame ducks got booted, and CNN and other such liberal mouth pieces were running (with the Justice department and ATF feeding them) pieces about how the US was supplying weapons to the cartels.

Never was it mentioned that these were guns SOLD TOT HE MEXICAN ARMY, but rather they used the Gun Walker guns to point to legal(ish- if you can consider ATF arm bending legal) that were sold by legit dealers, often over their objections.

My point is, hell yeah, I think lots hit the shredder, and what's left they sure the hell don't want falling out of the closet during a election year, I mean, how would the headline "Obama and Holder KNOWINGLY armed Mexican Cartels" float with the swing vote?

Shadow 7D,

Could you provide some authority for this?

The manner in which the House might approach a contempt citation would dictate the arresting party, but below is a very abbreviated version of alternatives.

Under its inherent contempt powers, the House of Representatives could instruct the Sergeant-at-Arms of the House to arrest Holder. Since the House Sergeant-At-Arms is one of the three members of the Capitol Police Board, one might assume that he could call on the members of the US Capitol Police for assistance.

Under the criminal contempt provisions of 2 USC § 194, a contempt citation would go through the court system and, assuming a guilty verdict, enforcement/arrest would be by the US Marshal Service.

Will this do: Family of ICE agent killed in attack files wrongful death claim against US government

The family of an Immigration and Customs agent slain in Mexico has filed a $25 million wrongful death claim against the U.S. government. ... Lawyers for the agents said the government's practice of allowing U.S.-bought weapons to be taken into Mexico as part of broader gun trafficking investigations involving Mexican cartels allowed the weapons used in this case to be smuggled across the border.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, but that's 'old' news, pumping the story and getting it back into the 24hr media along side this story....

Perspective is interesting. The BBC's coverage of the contempt vote against Holder ended with a mention of the Zapata lawsuit.

Overall, the BBC has probably had better, and certainly less slanted, coverage of Fast and Furious than the majority of the US media.

As much as I would love to see Eric WithHolder impeached and jailed now, I beleive it would be a bad strategy by the GOP. ..sorta like Newt shutting down the government funding during the Clinton's rein in the 1990s. It was an appropriate response given the circumstances, but it turned out to be a political disaster...

This thing could backfire (no pun intended) and cause the electorate to go far left in November and that could promote additional gun controls which I do not believe is warranted.

Let's not play into the hands of the ATF. More gun controls are probably what they were seeking with Fast and Furious.....

The smart thing to do now is give former AG Gonzalez ammunity and let him tell us why this was done so we can make sure it does not happen again.

I have my own opinions on what should be done but since they're not exactly up to THR standards I'll just say I hope this investigation against Holder/ATF continues and doesn't get left or swept under the rug.

There is one bright guy on Issa's committee; US Rep Gowdy. I watched Gowdy being interviewed on CNN 360 yesterday. The interview:

Rep. Gowdy: Obama's use of executive privilege absurd – Anderson Cooper 360 - CNN.com Blogs

It took longer to uncover the fact that the guns that killed Zapata were connected with federal gun running. There is a whole movement behind Brian Terry's murder. I think there will be for Jamie Zapata also but it's lagging behind the efforts of the people who are calling for justice for Brian Terry.

Wonder what the Mexican government thinks about the US President shutting down an investigation which may have verified hundreds of Mexicans killed by guns essentially sent to cartels with the approval of US officials.

What does the Mexican govt think about Obama shutting down the investigation?

I really don't think the Mexican government minds. They've bought into promoting President Obama's agenda.

This is what $720 Million buys you...

720 million in foriegn aid lets you buy a case of amnesia for the Mexican President - completely forgetting that the most "intense" violence suffered by Mexico occured when the BATFE was not only allowing hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of weapons to cross into Mexico - but they were actually directly responsible for moving massive numbers of weapons into the drug cartel's hands. It was like BATFE were drug pushers - they were weapons pushers !

Not only does the 720 mil buy you a convienient case of amnesia to forget about Fast & Furious - but it also gets you a willing partner to push the agenda that Fast & Furious was originally intended to bolster.
