It was apparent that the POI on that mile shot was changing as the barrel heated up. The sight picture they showed between some of the first shots and some of the last were completely different. It's not surprising that the experienced long range shooter came in second. He shot last. The person who came in first, also shot first.

It looked like the POI wandered about 4-5 feet to the right as the barrel heated up.

That was my thinking....

Was the barrel fouled for the first shooter? How much time was the barrel allowed to cool between shooters?

What distance was the gun sighted for? To make a 1 mile shot you have to be pretty familiar with a gun and the cartridge it is shooting....did these guys get to study the ballistics of the .338 Lapua before the competition?

I would have to guess that the barrel was fouled prior to first shooter, since they (George and/or Sawman) sighted the rifle in for a mile that morning. I doubt they cleaned it afterwards. But understand - we are not given that kind of detail. No one tells us (the shooting contestants) any information like that. We had no ballistic information of any kind.

Just walk out, a rifle is sitting there... try to hit a 40" target at a MILE.

Everyone had about the same time between shooters while they reset targets, messed with camera batteries, etc. Call it around 30 minutes.

I guess being zeroed at 100 yards would have made that shot nigh impossible. But, as you said, the conditions in which they zeroed the rifle would make a HUGE difference at that distance. A one shot hit by Jamie is nothing short of amazing. As for Brian Zins' raspberry when talking about reading the wind, I think in these conditions he may be right that for most of the competitors, reading the impact of the bullet down range was of more use.

Chris realllllly wanted to go fishing. Awesome shot.

Thinking about that thread the needle shot. Kelly was right (not sure about his wording) that shot has to go straight DOWN the tube for the length to score. That small target .. that's like laser precision to hit it.

Good episode though the wheel wasn't as exciting as I thought it was going to be.

Yeah that's what I was expecting. More realistic than the no stock MP5K clone ferris wheel--which was insane to be sure.

Awesome episode :D

Adam, Great shot with the Peacemaker/SAA! It's very cool that you are posting here with us, giving some insight to what's really going on. I have three questions for you if you don't mind. I wrote the first two down while watching.

First, when the wheel was being spun 3 times, did you close your eyes while being spun? I wondered about this before they showed Kelly's cam-talk about hit technique, and I'm curious if closed eyes would make you dizzier or not.

During practice for the wheel-shot, how many rounds did you guys get to use for practice, and were you allowed to dry-fire the security six at all to get a feel for the DA pull?

And this last one just occurred to me, when they ask you guys to step away from the range during certain shots, like the mile shot and the wheel-spin shot, are you guys just waiting, sweating in the sun down the trail a bit? Or do they have a shade-structure of some sort? The 30 minutes or so between mile shots just sparked that thought when I read your last post here. If you guys are just waiting down the trail, it makes me think the last person has more of a disadvantage.

Glad to see you're still in it! I really love this show and this is by far my favorite season, as the energy is great between competitors and the show is really focusing on the good stuff this time around.

PS: Sheeoot, one more question, sorry, do you guys get to see the episodes ahead of time, or is seeing it on TV the first time you get to see it all since actually participating?

Did you guys like the Wheel of Colby. I thought it was pretty funny when I told Colby that it was his image on the wheel (with hands firmly on hips). Ha!!!

To be honest, no one is trying to “make” Kelly look like an outcast as someone tried to claim above. Maybe that is just how he chooses to act, and we only dared say it out loud. He is still shooting great, and maybe that is a part of his competition strategy or preparation. By now we have been locked up together for 21 days? I was just saying he’s not much fun to live with…. (Kelly, Chris, and I share a room)

I think I closed my eyes as the wheel spun me around. I figured it might help prevent getting dizzy. But we didn’t get any practice runs so no way to try different techniques to compare what works best. I shot well straight upside down in practice, but they didn’t show it. Those off angles like 3-5 or 7-9 were the toughest. And Chris nailed it!

I think we might have had maybe 10 rounds each for practice? Full power .357 as I recall and tough double action shots!!

And to answer your last question – when we step away for a shot (like for the ONE MILE challenge) they put us in a van with blacked out windows and move us to the other side of the range so we don’t hear shots/count or see anything to know how our competitors are doing. The van runs it’s A/C but parked in that crazy heat, its not super effective.

Oh yeah… and we do NOT get to see the episode before it airs. As those 3 days get compressed into each 1 hour episode, we are as surprised as everyone else over what they decide to air!!

Very interesting! Thanks so much for being on here and taking time to answer questions. I always assumed you guys could hear how many shots it took for prior contestants on challenges like the mile-shot.

Also interesting that contestants have to wait like the rest of us to see the show, or in your/their case how they've edited it and what parts they've chosen to air.

Can't wait til next Wednesday :D

Maybe Kelly doesn't want to make a lot of friends and be social because it makes it harder when you end up sending someone home? He's also in a different age bracket, that can be tough since you have fewer things in common.

So Adam, I have a question for you. Where does a competitor go if he loses the elimination challenge? A hotel? Home? If I am next door neighbors with Blake (I believe he went home first) and I expect that he'll be gone for six weeks and he is outside cutting his lawn 4 days later, it's safe to say he didn't win. I'm just curious. Thanks, great shooting last night!

I also have a question for you Adam. I notice that Brian and Kelly use blinders -- what do the rules say about use of such items? Are some allowed and some not or can you use any accessory you deem necessary for a given challenge?

Yeah, it just seemed TV weird.

PORTRAYING the older guys are acting a bit like schoolgirls, and the young guy is just sitting there reading a book. (corny!!!)

Not a big deal, trying to create drama when there isn't.........TV never does that :D

Hello friends and neighbors // Way to "hang" in there Adam,, Congrats.

Very good show, these guys can all shoot extremely well with sure footing so it was great to see the wheel again.
Spinning with the push hold on the MP5K must have been tough, sure looked cool.

The Security Six is no light weight, especially in DA, at odd angles and would be quite a challenge if you weren't familiar with one, yet most did well.

Adam, do you personally own and enjoy shooting any of the weapons used so far?
Also please tell us what the contestants think the hardest challenge has been in these first few episodes.

Thanks for your time/energy... content

As far as we know, the guys who get eliminated walk off into the sunset. The viewer is not supposed to know what happens to them after that. Best to leave it at that....

I don't remember any rule about wearing blinders on glasses. Personal eye/ear wear didn't seem to be a big deal, but I am sure if you pushed that envelope the fairness officers would step in. But we are also like prison inmates and like to grab anything we can find just-in-case we might need it! :)

OilyPablo - its a bit offensive that you would accuse us old guys of 'acting like schoolgirls". I could easily say the same thing about you apparently having a schoolgirl crush on Kelly. See? That kind of stuff goes both ways. Relax and enjoy the show.

As for owning any of the guns from the show... I don't own any wheelguns, and I shoot compound bows with a release (not traditional with fingers). Everyone has an AR from the first challenge I would think. And probably a .45 and 9mm pistol. Except for Joe, I don't think he owns a single gun of his own! Pete has quite a collection. And I hear Jamie has an amazing Barrett MRAD now!!!!! But my stuff is more IPSC race gun setups and ordinary hunting rifles.

Not accusing - just stating what it came across as, and stating why I dislike the drama. I clarified my post with an edit.

I have already admitted working with Kelly. No man crush there.

I was rooting got Jamie, as he didn't seem to get much respect.

But his pomposity in his camera talk changed me mind. ("I'm supremely confident I'll win this challenge...")

Buh Bye now....

I've been enjoying this season of top shot. I like the new focus on the shooting.

The most recent elimination involved shooting through a series of small tubes. They are claiming on the show that you have to shoot staight through the tube for the shot to count. My question is, how are they determining a shot went through the tube cleanly, and didn't punch though a side wall or ricochet into whatever triggers the exposion?

The thing about the tubes is that YES, if the charge at the end of the tube explodes it counts for a hit. But if you hit the edge of the tube, or go partway in the tube and then angle out before exploding the charge its scored a miss.

And the charge is set way back at the end of the tube!

So think about standing there and how height can affect how you look through a narrow tube. In essence, the far side shooting window becomes e smaller. And very good chance a bullet hitting the long edge of the tube rim is going to deflect away.

On Season 1 we all shot this event and it was tense, but FUN! They even had a box there you could stand on if needed to help height alignment. And to put the difficulty in context, on Season 1 Kelly shot the 6th smallest tube, JJ shot the 4th smalllest tube, I shot 3rd smallest, Tara shot the 2nd smallest, and Chris shot the smallest tube. And all of us nailed it on first try!

Guess I was watching a differnt show ?

I saw about 1/2 of the show and turned off the show after what seemed like the 50 th facial close up to "interview" the shooters about their "feelings":banghead:.

I was expecting to see them putting on their makeup next.

Sorry but the CONSTANT yapping about their supposed dislike and distrust and other BS is too boring to let me enjoy the VERY few seconds of shooting they show.

btw,the show host REALLY needs a shave and he can 'butch up' all he likes,he don't shoot to show how its done so he could take a large cup [Redacted].

If I could record it, I would watch it on fast forward and then I would get to see the very few moments of actual shooting.

Sorry but I outgrew coolaid a long time back.
