Tom, there's one more thing you might want to consider about your sea change. I hang out at several gun stores in small-town Tennessee on a daily basis. I'm the only one in any of those stores that i talked to who was aware any of this was going on.
Despite the popularity of gun-forums on the internet, I think a tiny fraction of gun people participate. I'm 35. Neither my father or grandfather, who live elsewhere and have been shooting their whole lives, and using the internet since the mid '90s have any idea what happened. (they own ARs, too, and do not hunt)
My point is that what's interesting about this is the 'who' not the 'what'. If i had to guess, i'd say maybe 5% of shooters are even aware of what happened, and maybe 1% were responsible for it. When the news finally makes it to the rest of them, the response could be much, much larger.
