Zumbo: Gun rag writer trashes "Assault Weapons"

i agree with Mal H. That was a well-written piece.

Tom, there's one more thing you might want to consider about your sea change. I hang out at several gun stores in small-town Tennessee on a daily basis. I'm the only one in any of those stores that i talked to who was aware any of this was going on.

Despite the popularity of gun-forums on the internet, I think a tiny fraction of gun people participate. I'm 35. Neither my father or grandfather, who live elsewhere and have been shooting their whole lives, and using the internet since the mid '90s have any idea what happened. (they own ARs, too, and do not hunt)

My point is that what's interesting about this is the 'who' not the 'what'. If i had to guess, i'd say maybe 5% of shooters are even aware of what happened, and maybe 1% were responsible for it. When the news finally makes it to the rest of them, the response could be much, much larger.

Interesting point about how the internet gunnies are a very small percentage of gun owners.

>>When the news finally makes it to the rest of them, the response could be much, much larger.<<

Which brings up a question: How will they hear of it?

>>Well, I can tell you that the buzz is all over my club... And it's gonna be all over a match this coming weekend.<<

That's what I was wondering -- whether this had made it to shooters who do not frequent the online sites.

Hi Tom :) ,

It will spread slower to some folks, it will spread the same way the Ruger and S&W stories did back when there was no widepread Net. Some magazines will write about it. People will talk at ranges and clubs.

If nothing else, they'll learn about it thru Anti-gun "literature".

Hi Mountain's courageous response

Dear fellow 2nd Amendment Supporters,

I am writing to thank all of you for your activism in making us aware of the comments made on Mr. Zumbo’s blog. Hi Mountain Jerky and Seasoning has been a sponsor of his hunting show on the Outdoor Channel, but is in the process of terminating our relationship. We do not support his statements regarding his view of the Second Amendment and would not have supported the show or had his endorsement on our packaging in the past had we known this. We fully stand behind the individual right to keep and bear arms as our Founding Fathers intended. It is truly heartwarming to see the grass roots activism in support of our Second Amendment, please know Hi Mountain Jerky and Seasoning stands behind you.

Thank you,

Hans Hummel
President
Hi Mountain Jerky, Inc.

This is from a Wikipedia entry on The Outdoor Channel:

Among the most respected names on The Outdoor Channel formerly was Jim Zumbo. During the course of Jim Zumbo’s 30 year writing career, he captured the imagination of millions of hunters across the country. With his program Jim Zumbo Outdoors, Jim translated his extensive knowledge into an entertaining and educational hunting program. On February 16th, 2007, Jim published on his online blog that tack-driving AR-15 rifles used for varminting were only suitable for use by terrorists, and was fired by Remington on February 19th, 2007, as a spokesman. Due to these controversial and inflammatory anti-gun statements made by Zumbo, The Outdoor Channel chose to sever their affiliations with Zumbo. His online blog was dropped by Outdoor Life on February 19, 2007.

Which brings up a question: How will they hear of it?

well, yeah, i'm talking about it. it's just slow going. i mean, it'd be different if zumbo shaved his head and checked into rehab. now that i think about it... that could be his out!

seriously, talking about zumbo is interesting, but it smacks of rumors and gossip which are generally unappealing. (to me, at least) I'm mostly planning to quickly shift conversations to the new AWB in the house.

cmb336, Mossy Oak has responded emphatically. Please see posts # 601 and 603 of this thread, and check out this link for their statement.

Edited to Add: Please see also cpileri's Good Guy List at Post #696, above.

Outdoor Life, meanwhile, still doesn't seem to care too much. They still say they are only "taking him offline for the time being due to the controversy".

I had a subscription which i cancelled yesterday and they don't seem too concerned.

It may be a little premature to ask, but what has he lost so far? What does he still have? He's still with Outdoor life, right? Does anyone have a list of what sponsorships or gigs he has lost already and who's sticking by him?

Still waiting

I am still waiting to hear if the NRA will retain him as a Field Editor for Shooting Illustrated. It's a great publication but after one of their Field Editor's harpooned the Second Amendment the way Zumbo did, I will not continue to support it with a subscription or purchase if they retain him. Cam and Co on the Sirrus NRA Patriot 144 radio show was really pretty easy on him but the hunting editor for the NRA was much more firm. They still did not commit to any position regarding the NRA's plans for Zumbo. It would be nice to see the NRA take a stand the way Remington did but I would suppose there is more bureaucracy involved with the NRA.

I just called Cabela's to see if they have changed their mind or if their legal department is still working on it, but they said something along the lines that their sponsorship is over and they are just finishing up any legal obligations they have in cancelling the contract (if they owe money for breaking contract early or if he did anything that constitutes a violation so they don't have to pay). But all in all they said they have cancelled their sponsorship and there is no more Cabela's/Zumbo connection outside the legal dispute.

$20

Someone write the copy, choose a newspaper that folks think gun owners that do not use Internet sites - will read and tell me where to send the money.

Who will join me?

Firearm related persons, manufacturers of firearm related items and kind - I understand contractual agreements and the monies to severe relationships, still will you also rally with WE The People to contribute to ad(s) in a newspaper(s) that gun owners that do not use Internet might view?

Solidarity.

Internet sites have been burning up the bandwith, and still many are not aware of the depth and breadth of grass roots activism.

Politicians - I'd pay attention if I were you.

Not only am I suggesting copy in regard to a hunting writer also AWB-2 .

I want to see how many folks are willing to put their money where their mouth is...

Especially some of these Firearm and Firearm related manufacturers.

sm, how about outdoor life? :)

seriously, are you suggesting taking out ads? i'll chip in. pm me.

"How will they know?"

Beats me. But I just got off the phone with my favorite kinda-sorta elderly local gun shop proprietor who takes a certain amount of pride in not knowing about the internet.

He was all over it. One of his customers came in with the scoop. I gather the shop is all abuzz. I'll admit to being quite surprised.

In his "apology" he said he posted without thinking. He said he was tired and should have taken his time.

"I'm tired, but those look like terrorist rifles, tax increases are a good idea, and I hate all n@#$rs."

Nope, I can't imagine EVER being "tired" enough to say ANY of those things.

He was tired enough to say what he BELIEVED. Fatigue as truth serum.

And he never DID apologize for the "terrorist weapon" comment.

As to the, "I fly the flag 365 days a year," so does Teddy Kennedy. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

I want to see him posing on the range, brass in midair, with a Mall Ninja M4gery. Those photos need to be widely published.

At that point he gets my money, so do the people sponsoring him. Big time. That will, in fact, FIX the problem, because it'll contradict his words with actions.

As to the terms Fudd, Mall Ninja, Bunny Hunter, Paper Puncher, Bench-sitter, String Twanger, Charcoal Burner, Cowboy, Tacticool shooter, etc, I think they're great. I fit 5-6 of them myself.

Just as long as we know we're all in the same league.

20-07

I think we just invented a new Caliber; the 20-07. :)

Apologies to the Cooper family.

Ain't much a person can't do with '07
And a $20 bill and activist attitude.

Yeah, Politicians like these numbers, Brady and other Anti's like to attach numbers to mis-information. I say give them some numbers.

February of 2007 , a new caliber was just invented.

Like I said - where do I send my $20.07 ?
