Top Shot Returns -New Season

All I have to say about this season's competitors is that I kinda guessed who would be out first.

Much as Greg Littlejohn is a nice guy, he was consistantly having issues in his season.

He really does seem like a great guy, but I think we were all on the same page with that prediction :)

Yeah. Let's all go shave our beards and buy skinny jeans while we're at it.

And I don't buy for a second that it keeps women out of the sport. I'm sure there are examples, but I think it's the exception not the rule. But then again, I'm in the south. Most women here do shoot so I don't see a lot of women turned off by it.
Just like men don't want to be beaten by a woman, don't you think women feel a sense of pride when they beat a man? And there's nothing wrong with either of those things. It's the way we are.
My wife shoots and doesn't feel the least bit intimidated by my "male pride". And trust me, I have plenty of it.
The reason many don't see it is they are not female. Its there and quite hostile at times. I know I've experienced it first hand. Its the biggest obstacle I encounter in trying to get other women involved. Its very real and difficult to overcome and comments like BamBam's " lasting longer than the girl" and other comments along those lines only make matters worse. Its the largest hurdel to getting women to even go to the range let alone shoot, buy a firearm or get their CCL. Once over that hurdle everything else is easy.

As for Gabby she was at a disadvantage several times as the LOP was wrong for her on several firearms. No matter how skilled you are if the LOP is not correct you will be at a disadvantage compared to those without LOP problems. It's also a safety problem.

I've never seen anyone be hostile towards a shooter because they were female. But I've only shot 1000 matches.

On the women in shooting question - I'm also involved in other hobbies and activities which are mostly white and male. From what I have seen, there is very little hostility towards women, but there is a different feeling. Women stand out and are treated differently.
My impression is that women have to be a bit more aggressive than a man and develop a fairly thick skin to become one of the group.
If you are hesitant about getting involved, it doesn't take too many remarks which you hear as condescending, or too much overly familiar attention before you decide it's not for you.
Queen's comment about LOP makes sense, too. It's hard to shoot like an expert with a weapon you are struggling to use because it doesn't fit. Fortunately we have more choices now in the firearms market.

I had a college reunion a couple weekends ago....saw people I haven't seen in about 11 years. I live in Ohio in the North Royalton where Chris Cerino grew up, although now Chris lives further south.

One of my friends had never heard of the show and we somehow got on the subject. She used to go to high school with Chris Cerino! She said he was a "goofball" in school and is happy he made it on to the "right side of the law." It was apparently questionable back in the day.

Nevertheless, Chris looks like a great guy now and I have to pull for my Ohio native. For those who don't know, Cerino is a very prominent name in the North Royalton community and his grandmother started a nice Italian restaurant which the family still owns.

Should she have had specially fitted stocks for her on each long gun then? Perhaps reduced recoil loads since she had such a smaller frame and was likely more recoil sensitive?

I mean where does it end? Women want to be treated equal in sports but they want exceptions made to make things easier for them. (not saying Gabby asked for any of this)

I am very pro woman, you want to be a Police Officer, firefighter or front lines in combat? Go for it, but I demand you be held to the same standards as your fellow team members.

With women in shooting there are two sides to the coin. How about the less-than-stellar women shooters who land professional shooting contracts because they have great cans (and I don't mean silencers). They receive lavish sponsorships because of how they look more than how they shoot.

That is clearly biased reward system against men in the sport. No biggie - as long as you can recognize that the pendulum swings both ways.

There is a range/store here that was started for precisely that reason. The owner was tired of the women in his family complaining about how they were treated locally. He got his wife and several other women working in the store and offers, to my knowledge, the only women only - instructor included - CCW class in the area. At the same time, as a man, I don't feel awkward or underserved when I go in there.

As for Gabby, I agree that she had a handicap in several of the events. She also handled them very well, considering.

While I understand where you are coming from, you're making the flawed assumption that shooting contracts are based solely on match performance in shooting competitions.

I'd refer you to a video in Julie Golob's (Team S&W) blog about sponsored shooters...of the 5 kinds, only 1 needs to win matches. Mostly it is about reaching a targeted demographic...I think both Chris' fall into this category (Cerino & Cheng)

Hello friends and neighbors// Finally broke down and watched last weeks episode on my phone,, could not stream online line past the Colt SA challenge. Anyone else experience this?

I enjoy the overview of the show provided so it is nice to have USMCBamBam still with us.
Thanks for the input, hope the Bow Hunting goes well this year.

The shooters left sure had a fun week, if I had to pick one episode to shoot this would have been it. Although shooting the Hotchkiss comes a close second.

Everyone showed their strengths and weaknesses(the longbow).
Knowing all are outstanding shooters I like Chris's comment of "just do what I do".
If they can clear their heads and just shoot, it is anyone's game.

All this years contestants have been a credit to the sport and picking a winner is tough, everyone of them are winners.
I'll go for Phil because he has had the fewest years to hone his skill.

By far the best season. Still, I think Ellerman is the best of all of the competitors that we've seen. Imagine improvement to his skill set since S3!

Great finale!

DeadFlies, thanks for the link -- the Slate piece actually articulates very well what quite a few of us have been saying in this long-running thread.

Me, I'm hoping Top Shot returns. This season was excellent; the competitiveness and sportsmanship (and even some of the marksmanship) displayed was superb. More than anything else, the stuff they did just plain looked like great fun ...

This last episode, with Cerino and Morden locked in those close battles, was great. And who couldn't empathize with Brian Zins (hated to see him go out like that, just a super-nice ol' warrior) when he struggled with the AK, or even Cerino when the cross-bow kicked his butt? If you've ever competed, you've had those "oh, #@%&!" moments ...

Hey Adam. Now that the show is over, any comments you want to make on the whole experience?
