Top Shot Returns -New Season

As a TV producer and director, reading through this thread, you can see the dilemma that the creators of this show face. Hardcore gunners are not the demographic they are going for, television is about eyes and advertising. If they made Top Shot appeal to hardcore gunners only, History would cancel it because there aren't enough hardcore gunners who would watch it to keep the ratings up.

FWIW, they do an amazing job at producing the show, the photography is superb and the show is rarely boring. I like this season a lot so far, although I do confess to FF through the commercials and the house stuff, I really only want to see the shooting. It goes without saying that this show is the best gun show on non-premium channel television (yes, I know there are some good ones on Outdoor Network, but I don't want to pay more to get that channel).

My son watches it with me and digs it, wife hates it but she isn't into guns at all so that is expected.

On the snake shot: I know that you probably couldn't do it as an event on TV. But it does resemble a situation (in real life) that I have been in more than once with rattlers. May if the guns were un-holstered and the timer started with the buzzing...First the soft click-click-click that speeded up to the full buzz. However, the shooters would have to wear the shooting protection that automatically mutes gunfire.

Capybara thanks for the insider view. That is what I was saying but without the credentials to support my POV.

I think what makes this season work is that these are all folks who have been on the show before and are known to followers of the series. When introducing new competitors to the viewing audience, the in-house segments and the individual interviews help to introduce them and to give some ownership to the viewer to create interest in how they do in the competition

Its still "reality" tv

I hope y'all enjoy the 'mini drama' that they INSIST on doing with all 'reality tv' shows.

I for one [ possibly the only one ? ] cannot abide this format and will either turn off the sound [ the 'host' is CHEERING too loud to hear the gunfire ], or watch "say yes to the dress" with the wife,as they use the same format.

Mini drama's are for those that don't like to see a subject or topic actually covered, they need drama.

Wild Alaska has more real danger & substance and MUCH less drama than does this show.

Enjoy !.

Scaatylobo, We get it you dont like it . You can stop running the show down in every page now. Just move along and dont click on this tread anymore.

OH ok

Gee I am SO sorry that I disturbed your thread ---- not.

get over yourself.

A little different mindset is usually a good thing.

Sorry ,guess I will taste the coolaid now .

I watched last night for the first time in a long time (nothing else on)
I listened to him say that this season is all about the individual, then he made them pick teams. (squads)
I hate being lied to.

Although I would love to be able to shoot a gumball off a golf tee, shooting backwards using a mirror. (Gun upside down of course.):D

I like the show since there's little else shooting going on.
One thing I noticed is that the shooting courses seemed much more elaborate in seasons past. No big deal though.
Also, winning a tent? come on. I thought a gift card (prior seasons) more classy but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
I forget/missed what the grand prize is this year.

yeah, I had to laugh at the two man tent too!!!<<<<<proper use of to, two, and too.:D
Whoopie!!! A pup tent!!!
I think the GP is 100K, and a bassboat or someting.

The "squads" were for that challenge only. It made sense, since the only other way would've been to have each shooter do each challenge, which would've taken way too long.

The shooting determined the lowest scoring squad, the shooting determined which two faced off and the shooting determined which one went home.

I am totally not getting all the supposedly pro-gun folks who insist on running down this show.

ANY television show that not only depicts "gun folk" in a positive light -- as normal, productive, intelligent citizens (could be your next-door neighbor) -- AND portrays shooting as a tremendously fun, challenging sport -- should be embraced by us, not denigrated.

I'd submit this show has done a lot to bring previously non-shooters into the fold (actually, one of our local guys, the cop from Kent, mentioned this in this season's first episode). Kelly is another local guy, an active member of one of our popular Puget Sound area gun forums whom many of us have met, and like ...This show is all good for our sport, and our cause.

I'm not sure why some feel compelled to speak only negatively about positive portrayal of our gun culture on the mainstream media. This show hardly compares to the stupidity of crap such as "Jersey Shore" or "Real Housewives" ...

OK, I read the thread and watched an episode this past Wednesday. All I can say is, if this is the best gun show on TV, then we really don't need any gun shows on TV. Shoot the target with the gun upside down using your pinky as the trigger finger? Please! :banghead:

Once upon a time, History Channel actually had shows about history, not fake reality.

I think that's called trick shooting

Trick shooting. Yeah. That is what they called it. Considering the show's "target audience", it probably won't be long before we start seeing people practicing it at the local range.

To be honest I lost interest when they started tossing rocks.

Whats wrong with trick shooting? I have practiced a few trick shots before. Ed McGivern is still worshipped today by a lot of people, and he had to be a heck of a good shot before he became a great trick shot. Trick shots don't mean unsafe, you know. Obviously safe behavior is required, and you need to know what lies beyond your range, but it can be a fun diversion.

Now, there are exceptions to that statement, and unsafe is always bad, but don't paint with too broad a brush when it comes to condemning the practice.

Are you saying that all they should be doing is shooting from conventional positions...that seems a bit limiting.

I've tried all the trick shots on the show except splitting a bullet on an axe blade...I can cut an playing card edgewise, so it seems doable. I'm pretty much a handgun shooter and gumballs might be beyond me, but golfballs are an interesting challenge.

The hardest is breaking two plates at the same time. It takes good timing, the ability to separate the movement of both hands and yet press both triggers at the same time.

Shoot a gun upside down is pretty common...I use it as a demonstration of the preeminence of a good trigger pull in determining good shot placement

No, trick shooting is fun to try when out plinking with friends, and fun to watch when experts are demonstrating their skills. But somehow, it didn't make for riveting TV. I was really expecting more. Shooting gumballs off of golf tees was the only thing that I saw worth watching. Maybe I was expecting too much.

I've done the simultaneous hits on two plates and it doesn't seem that hard. I couldn't tell if they were shooting double or single action. Double would be a bit harder to time.

I was not really impressed with the prone rifle shot at 60 yards.

I can truthfully say i have tried the axe blade thing, and I can truthfully say that I have been successful at it. I am simply choosing not to tell you the ratio of shots to success :)

Just wait until it replaces the Hollywood sideways grip.
