My Finn arrived on Thursday. I don't have any real high quality ammo for it yet, just Bulgarian & Czech surplus and some Brown Bear. But, I'm going to take it out tomorrow and give it a try. I'll probably post another entry after I pick up some S&B for it in another week or so.

Russian capture K98.Bore is very good.Made in 1938,only marking is 27 so I don't know who made it.On average the groups are bigger than this plate but this was the best plate of the day. That is 5 shots, the one whole that is larger is 2 shots.

Today I went to the range to take a few warmup shots with my milsurps. I bought five different types of target ammo for my M69 Trainer and I couldn't get a decent groups until I switched bach to WWB 500 pack I usually use. I fire the five 100 yard shots and when I looked down range the plate had NOT ONE HOLE IN IT. I decided to switch to my K31. I fired a nice well aimed 5 shots and when I looked down range, ALL MISSES AGAIN!!. Now I am seriously dissappointed in my shooting for the day so I walk down range to pull the plates down and go home. When I reach out to grab the plates I notice a beautiful 1 1/2 - 2 inch group of .22 holes right to the left of one plate and a similar group of 30 cal holes next to the other plate. Two awesome groups BOTH about three inches to the left of the plate. Oh well.

Finally got a chance to go shoot.

Persian Mauser, best plate of the day with a 4 inch center to center spread:

And here is a Finnish M39 with a 2 1/4 inch center to center spread. What a great shooter!

My loads were so light I was sooting up the cases and had to shight in at the 600 meter setting to get on paper... :what:

However here is my entry... standing... about 5.5 inches edge to edge..

Rifle Vz 24 8x60 S

I think with a better load it will be fairly accurate.

jon in wv.Some of my rifles like the K98 are shooting left or right,or sometimes high. What I did was place a plate center for aiming then another in the impact zone in these cases.I plan on trying a Swedish mauser,Carcano and a 7mm VZ24 all of which have sights that start at 300 meters so impact from point of aim will be high.

So the correct way to measure a group is from the insides of the 2 farthest hits?Didn't know that I thought is was from the outer edge of the 2,that's why I just show the measure tape, wasn't sure how to measure a group honestly.

TauZero what kind of ammo did you use in the Fin M39?The Persian mausers are rather accurate rifles, when I tried mine I always seemed to have a flyer.

Sorry for the mispelling on my last couple posts, guess I was tired.I was going to go out today again but I went partying with a girlfriend last night and the only thing keeping me awake right now is Cuban coffee:scrutiny: lol...

This is a really cool thread,it is giving a opportunity to witness what various milsurps and ammo can do and what we do best with which type.I'm surprised no Swedes have been posted yet,and I hope more members shoot up some plates.:)

For the M39, i tried 4 kinds of ammo. The one i posted was with 7N1. The next best was with Bulgarian heavy, then Bulgarian light, and the worst was Wolf 205 grain.

I was a little disappointed with the Persian Mauser. I was expecting it to be better, because the first time i took it out i was shooting milk jugs at 400 yards. I think the issue is the rear sight, which is a very shallow notch. It was hard to see. But when shooting at longer distances, the sight is raised up and the notch is more visable. Truly a gun made to shoot long distance!

I also shot my Hakim, but the results weren't worth posting:eek:.

LK, I think the most common measure is center to center. It is hard to find the center of a hole without some special tools so I usually measure from the inside edge of one hole to the outside edge of the far hole. Should be the same as center to center.

Some folks measure outside to outside then subtract one hole diameter. This is really useful when the group is one ragged hole. I hardly ever have to use that method.

I was going to try this today, but the local range doesn't allow anything other than printed paper targets. Maybe if I put the plate behind the target...

Please

I need you guys to make note if the group size. I cannot accurately determine your score from a tape measure or ruler placed in the pictures frame, as this match could very well be won or lost by a couple tenths or hundredths of an inch

groups need to be a center to center measurement. You can arrive at this in two ways.

ONE measure the overall group at it's farthest 2 holes outside to outside and subtract the bullet diameter

two same as above save you measure outside to inside of the 2 farthest holes. This kinda automatically calculates a CtC measurment

Or to avoid the calculation measure from the INSIDE of the farthest hole to the OUTSIDE of the other farthest and this will give you the "center to center" measurement. I think the ruler in the photo is a nice touch but we should do our own measurements and post them. I agree with that.

Lionking. My 91/30 shoots about 4-6 inches high at 100 yards (depending on the load) my K31 is also slightly high so I aimed at the bottom of the plate. My elevation was on, but I shot right for some reason. last time I was out with my K31 I aimed and the neck and shot easy headshots. I think it was ME not the weapon thought as my M69 did the same thing. I should have taken a picture of it. It was comical that I had two EXCELLENT groups but they were both the same distance off to the left of the plates. If I had my spotting scope I could have noticed this and stapled some plated up next to the ones I had and I would have had some serious bragging to do. As it was I get nothing. OH well.

Krochus,I saved the plates so I'll measure them again and list the sizes.....

and future ones I'll post with the new posts.

I went to the range again today with my K31. I shot a 1 5/8 inch three shot group on my second try,. Figures I would forget the stupid plates. I should DQ myself just on principle.

my oh so sweet favorite Garand Springfield 4.2 million serial that I own.Muzzle wear is 2.I am so happy with the accuracy of this rifle,it is dialed in center of the black at 100yds and here is the best plate of the day, though the other 2 tries I did were not too shabby either.:D

Earlier in the thread the Yugo M-48 Mauser was brought up as not being an issued rifle. I can tell you for certain that the M-48 was used in the Balkan war in the Early 90's as there is plenty of photographic documentation to prove that. I have also seen several rifles that have been mounted with Optical sights and used as sniper rifles in that conflict as well.

French MAS 36

First time shooting it today. Not overly impressed with it.Feels like a log, sights are crude, and the fact it is shooting way left with no windage adjustment including no way to drift the front sight. For a $120 bucks I paid worth for just having a example but not a prime milsurp IMO.Bore is counterbored but pristine.Action is very smooth on a good note.

LK

It appears your K98 (and a very nice one at that) was made by
Erfurter Maschinenfabrik 1938 - aka ERMA. Aproximately 82,101 were made that year by them.
