Hi Krochus
+1 on that call. I sure hope they include a picture of their 100 year old 22lr. Love to drool over those oldy but goody's. What would be some of the 22lr's that are still around. I had a Winnie 1897 built in 1904 could I have shot it with slugs? :D:rolleyes: .

Great submissions thus far let's keep em rolling in.

Sometime before Monday I plan on taking a stab at the 100 and 50yd modern classes.

I also wanna remind folks of some cartridges that qualify for the modern firearm 100yr old cartridge classes they may have not thought of

.44 and .357 mag rifles firing their respective "special" cartridges

of course 30-06

9mm Luger has been mentioned

30 and 35 remington

pretty much all the "Mauser" cartridges and milsurp bolt action calibers with the exclusion of 7.5x54 French MAS, 7.7Jap and that larger Carcano cartridge

7.62x54r yes you could shoot a PSL

45acp and 45LC carbines

OK guys now you've got your work cut out for ya!:neener:
I got to the range at 5AM before it got hot to throw down the gauntlet for the hot 50yds modern rifle irons class with what ended up being a 1.15" group. I also shot my submission for the 100yd 100yr old cartridge class but at 1.4" I don't think it will stand in the lead for long.

After much experimenting with various POA and plate color layouts the old heirloom pre 64 Winchester and my garage rechamber 303 single shot really started to show their mettle (no pun) and quite honestly surprising the heck outta me.

The Russian Remington

Lastly the go to gun, My Ruger M77

These repeating rifles with their smokeless powder and jacketed bullets are just a passing fad.

I assume we're measuring center to center, if so this is just shy of an inch at .99" according to my micrometer. Yes, there really are 5 holes there:D Darn flyer ruined my group. I had a few others that were one ragged hole but they were strung out more than this one.

Dang that blows the wind right outta my sails. I really thought 1.1 could wrap this up then alemonkey takes things to a whole nother level

krochus, good shooting with that Ruger (and the others) .... but I hope to get under 1" at 100 yards with my Marlins. The only rifles that I have that shoot 100 year old cartridges are the two Marlins already shown, and another Marlin in .45 Colt. Maybe I'll try 50 yards with iron sights but there's no way I can get even close to 1" with the 1894 with the XS ghost ring sights on there. :(

I for one would like to see 1st, 2nd and 3rd place on the leaderboard. It's the only way my name will remain up in lights ... for the time being anyway.

alemonkey, I'm amazed you can even see that black dot at 50 yards. What's your aiming point, the bottom of the plate maybe?

:)

I can just barely see it....I put in a new pair of contact lenses this weekend :D

I'm actually aiming right at the center of the dot. The front globe sight has interchangeable inserts that you can replace as needed for different situations. For BPCR silhouette shooting I usually use a lollypop type, kind of a circle on a post, and just put the ram or chicken or whatever inside the circle. For this I used a very thin crosshairs insert. I've never been able to use it for silhouette shooting because it blocks the target, but it was just right for this.

Interesting .... and mighty fine shooting with that .45-70. How's the recoil by the way and what sort of velocity are you getting with that 540gr bullet? The reason I ask is that I find my two Marlins to be intense to say the least when fired from the bench. I plan on using the chronograph on the next outing but I'd estimate (based on load data) that I'm getting between 1,500 and 1,700 fps with the 405 gr JSPs.

:)

Well, I don't own a chronograph so I couldn't tell you what kind of velocity I'm getting, but with a bullet that big I'm guessing it takes its own sweet time getting down range. Even at 100 yards there's a noticeable lag between the report of the rifle firing and the sound of it hitting the berm.

Recoil is fairly stout. Shooting from sitting or offhand positions isn't bad at all, but when shooting prone or from the bench it gets your attention. It does help that the rifle is fairly heavy, but I'd say after about 20 rounds from prone I'm ready for a break.

Alemonkey, nice shooting, and beautiful rifle. Mark up another one for the Midwest guys.:neener:

Updated leaderboard on post1 now with 1st second and 3rd places.

I believe I now have all my rifles in that qualify in this match. I plan on taking a stab at bettering my 100yd scoped group but it's gonna take patience. Hundred degree ambient temps and a pencil thing bbl have combined to open up My Ruger's normally stellar groupings. I'm gonna really have to spread out my shots to get the kinds of groups I could get rather quickly with this rifle when it's 70 outside

Folks we need more antique rifles shot in this match.

and there's still lot more competition to be had fro the hot "100yr cartridge 50yds irons" class even with alemonkey's outstanding feat of marksmanship

hey fellas. garand poobah here. im flying bryans older, smarter, better shooting brother, and i have an entry for the 100 year old cartridge division, 50 yards open sighted class.

the paper reacted kind of funny where we spray painted the circles. i guess it dried the paper and it flaked out between the bullet holes. so my brother checked with the match director before posting it, as well as witnessed it being shot.

oh yea, the rifle. its the nearer one.

lol, ya, thats my brothers handy work.

i went to the range with the full intention of putting a dent in the leaderboard.

didnt pan out and hes having a field day with me over it!!!!!

i will post a few of my groups too after dinner, lol, none will make the leaderboard but they still aint too bad!!!

I just can't get over how competitive the 50yds irons modern rifle class is becoming, and as hot as this match is next months will be even hotter with all the same and even more firearms qualifying. But that's all I'll say right now......

Terrific shooting Garand Poobah and welcome to THR.

I'll get that leaderboard updated once photobucket comes back online

*NICE* shooting garand poobah. You need to get a sling and shoot that rifle like JCG intended! :D

Not sure if I can beat that group, but I'll try to give you a run for your money! I'm shooting my M1 this Sunday (with super-secret ammo) and will report back.

Likely story...5mm huh. :D Ammo must be awful to find, I think you can convert it to centerfire IIRC. I have seen some for sale at gun shows and it fetches a pretty steep price, convert that booger. :)

Not really. Aguila has started making it again & marketing it under the Centurion name.

The original Remington ammo has almost achieved collector status and can be quite pricey.
The Aguila ammo costs a little more than 17HMR depending on who you order it from, but not bad ($15-$20/50). It's not a plinking round.

Last month I got a deal I couldn't refuse on two pristine, scoped 592M's, bought some Aguila ammo & am in the process of wringing them out.
Sweet little varmit rifles.
