June 2009 AR15 paper plate match

I just got this Armalite last week and took it to the range and fired 9 shots with a good barrel cleaning after each shot while adjusting the sights. The manual stated to then fire 5, clean, then 5 more, clean and then it was good to go with watchouts for sustained firing. First gun I ever tried this on, don't ask me why. I got the last barrel breakin done today with Federal Value Pack and got down to business. These are the next 10 shots with Black Hills ammo before the rains had me picking up in a hurry. I left my other targets still hanging. I wanted to try at 100 yards also and use some 52 gr. match stuff but that will have to wait another day. :banghead:

Class #2 entry
Armalite M15A4BNM 20" 5.56
1.130" group center to center
50 yards open sights 6 o'clock hold
Bench/Bag
Black Hills 68 gr. Heavy Match HP
Total round count - 29 yee haw!

Fired 3 and walked to target, then 3 more and walk. I can't see the holes that far away unless they hit the shoot n see. The last four are on the right and rushed a little because the gun was getting wet. :cuss:

is there any way you could snap a pic with a ruler on the plate or something.

the reason is because these two entries look so close in size but quite a big difference in measurements(over half an inch)

they just look really close and i want to get it right.

FlyinBryan, there's NO WAY that group is 1.13" .... the rings around the bullet holes are close to 1/4" so obviously the group is much closer to 2" than 1". An unintentional error that'll soon be corrected I'm sure. :)

I think you should [strike]request[/strike] demand every group be shown with some form of scale ... ideally a caliper or similar.

:)

You know, the internet is quite fascinating sometimes. Well, most of the time. sigh You take a "fun" match to run what ya brung and hope you brought enough. You compete against people that you don't know and most likely will never meet. The best part is that you get out to shoot and have fun and take your mind off of the nonsense in life. You can post a target early and make everyone shoot for that score or you could have great one and just wait and throw it out there the last day. Of course, you don't get your name up in big lights for a few days or weeks. Most likely you won't get much scrutiny either because the next month will be in full swing. In reality, there is no prize to be had and the fun can be taken out of things in a hurry with a simple post of a target shot earlier in the day. I just got done taking some pics of that target again but with the added benefit of 3 rulers and a set of Midway calipers. In looking back at previous post, I notice a lack of rulers or calipers for some great groups. I also didn't see any scale references or questions about the groups. I just seen some post about "nice shootin'." For the skeptical of the bunch, the rulers are an old Fox Chase Farms yardstick, a First National Bank of Bradford County ruler with a piece of black electrical tape covering my name up, and a Fisher Scientific ruler that has a Catalog No. 9-016 on it. Now, none of these rulers were calibrated in the taking of the following picture but the funny part is that they all read the same when lined up next to one another when this post was in full song. I could have also added a Craftsman tape measure from downstairs into the bunch but things were getting crowded in a hurry and I was too lazy to get it. The Midway calipers were spot on target right out of the case. I added a piece of yellow paper from Post-it Notes to make things stand out. I think we know the internet by now. Oh, lets not forget the paper plate. For starters, its a freakin' paper plate that can be bought just about anywhere you would go to buy paper plates for a picnic. A quick measurement of said paper plate came out to 9.25 inches across. I think it is a safe bet to say that my paper plate is as "standard" as they come. It does make you wonder who sits down and thinks this crap up standardizing paper plates. I think I bought the 2 packs at the Aldi's in Sayre, PA, no wait, it might have been the Dollar General in East Towanda. I'm sure the boys at Quantico can pull a few fibers for cross referencing while their measuring my center to centers. The Birchwood Casey sticker on said plate is a run of the mill Birchwood Casey sticker that was definetely bought at Fulmer's Sporting Goods in Wysox, PA a few months ago. I hope they don't shrink because they are always in the side pocket of the range bag. Oh, it measures 3" across if you go yellow to yellow. For the guy (1858) that said that my group is closer to 2 inches than 1 inch and something about a correction. Are you for real? I just run that program OnTarget that someone posted and it came out to 1.128" CTC. One could easily get the impression that it is closer to 1 inch than it is to 2 inches. I just looked at a final post about the groups looking a little big. I guess that could mean all of us, scoped and iron. I can only count for myself on my shooting abilities. I only have sight in one eye and I try my best with what I've been dealt with. I'm forced to shoot lefty and it definetly isn't what I was programmed with in the brain. There are a hell of alot of guys in this town that I live in that will make all these groups look like childs play. The best part is they do it at 200 meters with irons. I was damn proud of the group that I shot today for a gun that is almost like a virgin. She's only been had 29 times of this posting. Look out toots, theres more in you even if it doesn't need to be in a contest or be contested. I still love ya no matter what. If we resort to running this crap all the time with targets then you won't be surprised if there isn't as many participants. I know of one that has that is leaning that way.

Judah Ben-Hur, my apologies for thinking that the group was larger than the measurement posted. I did genuinely think that you'd made a typo (but you cleared that right up) and no malice was intended. I did feel that I was questioning your group in a fun way. Anyway, I hope that's enough or am I going to have to send you a box of reloads. :) This is a fun match and I think everyone is taking it that way so sorry to give the wrong impression, that wasn't my intention.

Sarduy's group sure does look a lot closer in size to yours ... maybe his is a lot smaller than he thinks (the group I mean). :)

Did you ever see those "optical illusions" were you had to pick the longest line of 2 pictures or what circle was bigger with a whole bunch of colors and shapes to throw you off? Don't you think that the brain is doing just that with a smaller black dot that is most likely 1 inch with holes punched outside its diameter greater than 1/4" in different spots and posted as a 1.75" group as compared to a 1.128" group near a 3" black circle? It makes them look the same when they are really not. Do you think that is in play here? The question I have is why the skepticism on my group on the outset? It wasn't just from one either. If "sarday" posted the wrong size for his group then that is not my problem and all this is for nothing. I'm sure someone will come along and beat both. I won't questioned it, I'll thank them and if time permits try and beat it. Then I seen a post about maybe something was 1.73 or something or written down wrong. Well if it was 1.73 something then that still beats a 1.75 in my book. I still don't get the jist of it all. It makes you just sit back and say *** is wrong with people. I posted what I got and gave a group size with a quick little measurement with a set of calipers. Some could say I cheated myself with my initial written score. Its not rocket science and the more it is made that way then you will see a drop. There are a ton of better shooters in this town that don't even post on the internet and the ones that do probably don't know how to save to servers or upload pictures from them. I don't think that they would even set the gun up for anything under 200 meters anyway and I've only seen iron sights. I sat back and watched them shoot prone, sitting, and standing and the prone groups from 2 of them at 200 meters make my bench rested 50 yard group look like dog*****. That is were they start to play when getting ready for Camp Perry and Indiantown Gap. If you start making people use programs, videos, or witnesses then it has become what I despise and that is organized chaos. It is hard enough getting to the range but going through all the rig-a-ra-mo is not worth it. I turned my back on that a long time ago in other sports.

If you detected a touch of sarcasm in any of my post then you done your part as well as I done mine. The chicks are probably better looking at CSI:Miami then the Quantico gals anyway so maybe I'll hand deliver it to them to check out.

no need to get testy.

and the reason yours was singled out was because it looks so similar to the other group that measured quite differently.

if your feeling got hurt, my apoligies, like i said, i didnt think you were cheating, but i did think you made a mistake, and i really dont see the harm in clearing it up.

now i think maybe sarduy measured wrong cuz you must see how similar in size they look.

congrats, you currently hold 1st in your entered class.

for anyone else with an entry, if its gonna put a twist in your panties to throw a ruler down if requested, might wanna not post an entry.

this is not t-ball, and everyones not gonna win first.

I'm wasn't testy when I posted those last 2. I am now that the Red Wings bit the big one. :cuss:

Anybody in for a side match with say a stuffed penquin target, tannerite, 30 rounds, at say 100 meters, prone?

T-ball, I'd dominate that game right now with the competitors I've seen! :neener:

I really never intended to join in on this, I was just shooting for fun, later that night was going to throw the targets away until this post got me thinking. Thats why there are an extra 10 fired faster at the top of the plate. I fired until the tack was gone, then unloaded the rest above to not ruin the group.
By the way I measured wrong. Its 1.0625 (according to decimal conversion) or 1 and 1/16th. At least the way the last group was measured. I measured mine from the outside of the holes, not the center of them.
By the way nice shooting guys. I might do some more next week, maybe not.

Guys,

I don't have a stake in this competition, I just heard all the shooting & wandered over from the rim-fire match to see what was going on.

I have been using the On Target program for some time as scoring these things can get a little dicey without some standard & that is why I posted it.

Sorry for the intrusion. I'll just sneak back over to the rim-fire line.
The range is hot. Commence firing.

Regards, Hud

dont apoligize hud, i think its a great program, and if any more look really close i fully intend to use it, if i can figure it out.

this tourny is just for fun, but to me at least, what makes it fun is the competition.

i honestly thought i would be able to crack the top 3 in at least one class, but the more entries we get, the darker that proposition is starting to look, lol, so im just planning to run it, and keep it fair (i.e. fun)

I might enter the 4th category with my friends 20 inch Colt Hbar, with a 24 power scope, and bipod. You can see the holes at 100 yds with that scope easily. I set the sights and scope for him.

awesome shvar!

the top three in class 4 right now are:

jdgray,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,0.97"
whitman31,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1.05"
garand poobah,,,,,,,,,1.15"

Whitman31,

Great shooting! Getting a little close for comfort:neener:

JBH, Great job! Glad I only could listen to the game on a radio. I heard it was painfull to watch:cuss:

I am not entering this group because I believe I can do better. Just started load develpoment with a .223 Sabre Defense. The caliper is dialed in at the current group 4 leader's group . I hope to shoot a few groups this week.
