Top Shot - Season 3

I thought last night's episode was one of the best of the season as far as lack of drama and straight-shooting competition goes. As far as "drama" goes, I really like Jake and Dustin. Polar opposites in character, both really great shooters. I kind of hope it comes down to those two for entertainment value alone, and it would work for ratings. Kind of a face vs heel kind of thing since Dustin is so likeable and Jake is so hated.

...says the guy who likes the most reprehensible person on the show.
Sometimes ya gotta read past the headline-like, mebbe the first line of the post?
To wit: At least as far as serving a purpose.

Just curious, but who other than Jake seem to take themselves too seriously?
Whoever the guy was that gritted his teeth at Jake-based on other posts, apparently his name is Mike?
EDIT: I just remembered-also the red headed guy that painted the Jake target on the house.

The rest are remarkably humble...
Jest wondering how many times I've heard folks on the show refer to themselves as Master (this and that), or recite a long resume only to be sent packing by some good old country boys (this season and last).

...and set on the idea of doing the best possible while using good sportsmanship rather than poor gamesmanship like your buddy Jake.
Sorry-I thought the name of the show was Top Shot-not Best Sportsman. While I may or may not agree with his tactics, Jake is definitely getting into some competitors' heads.

And the guy using superhuman powers to hold himself back from pounding the baby seal into the ground was Mike Hughes...
Well if he really had superhuman powers (heck, mebbe just a little self control), he wouldn't have allowed himself to get into a shouting match.

all around good guy and a great shooter...
Show says...NO-another Master sent packing...

And will, I suspect probably win this show or be in the top two
Let me know how that works out for him! :D
Jeez...I don't keep up with this soap opera as much as some in here, but even I knew the teeth gritter was sent packing!

I doubt Jake would be the someone I would befriend (although how much on the show is an act/strategy?), I'd much rather have a drink with him than the teeth gritter...

If it does come down to those two (and I'm pulling for it also), I wouldn't be surprised if we were to see a total change in Jake's personality. I've got a feeling he knows his tactics wouldn't work on Dustin (can anyone see Dustin allowing himself to get into a teeth gritting shouting match with him?)-heck, they might get along just fine.

If it comes down to those two - I promise you Jake wil try to find something to try and get in Dustins head. Dustin is a good shot and very adaptable. I like his chances at winning this thing. Jake is a great shot, but I think he's too sensitive and will out think himself eventually.

Those are typically competition titles. Top-run of IDPA is Master level and top-run of USPSA is Grand Master.

You have to remember that such titles are typically earned in a specialty, shooting a weapon of your choice. Not only are they not shooting their own guns in here that they've meticulously practiced with, but they're often not even shooting the same platform.

Cliff Walsh was (or rather IS) one of the best revolver shooters in the country. He is is a Grand Master ranked revolver shooter, but got sent home on a recurve bow challenge.

Mike Hughes was also a Grand Master, and lost on a challenge a little more close to what he'd normally shoot, but it WAS with a P-38 - which is pretty far off from most modern pistols (not to mention the challenge included manually loading rounds).

Realistically, most of those guys with a Master title of any sort truly did earn it, and its a bit disingenuous to doubt the title's validity based on performance in a completely different area.

I don't think there's any doubt that guys like Dave Sevigny and Jerry Miculek are about the top dogs in autos and revolvers (respectively), but put them in a rock throwing, tomahawk, or archery challenge and sure, Bubba Jethro might beat them. Doesn't mean that Bubba's a better shooter. It means that he happened to win at one challenge that his opponents skill didn't favor.

Methinks it's not I that need to "remember"-I think it's some of the 'Masters' on the show. I didn't expect much when they get 'em out of their comfort zone, but I gotta confess I didn't think some of 'em would do as poorly as they have.

I don't doubt the 'validity' of their title (for what it's worth)-methinks some of 'em should just spend a little less time reading their own press releases.
Was it Athena? (multiple title holder) that couldn't hit squat with anything she shot?
Once they get out of their own little specialized world...

Heck-they don't have to do that! Did not the gal with the long resume Dustin sent packing a few weeks ago teach shooting with the M&P...and he made her look bad with what...darn if it wasn't an M&P!?

When they introduced last season's competitors, when the country boy was introduced and made the comment 'bout shooting being less of a game and more a way to put food on the table (paraphrasing here), I knew he was going to be trouble!

Some folks seem to think if you have to have a piece of paper hanging on the wall to prove you're a good shot-most of the old country boys I've been around view it more as a necessity-they're putting food on the table and meat in the freezer.

Reminds me of a former co-worker from WV...he said they got a new game warden in the area, and when he was talking to some of the locals he mentioned something 'bout deer season and they all broke out in laughter. Someone informed the warden these folks ain't hunting for sport-they're hunting for food!

If how well you and your family eat depends a lot on your shooting skills...well, hunger can be a great motivator for "Bubba" AFA improving his skills and focus.

Methinks mebbe basicblur jest has something against accomplished shooters (and English). Not sure why you feel the need to minimize there accomplishments but they have set out to accomplish something, something they presumably enjoy, and have risen to the top of that chosen field. They didn't set out to get a piece of paper. They set out to be the best they could, trained and increased their skill and then EARNED the piece of paper in that particular discipline BECAUSE they are a good shot. Methinks.

The radio show being 'delayed' and now out of sync with the show for 2 weeks makes me suspect something very unusual happened. Of course I could just be reading into that way too much.

Nah...I'm just an old country boy in flyover country that doesn't take himself so seriously, apparently trapped in a world of folks that do!

Not sure why you feel the need to minimize there accomplishments...
Based on their performance, that boat has already sailed-no need for me to pile on.
There accomplishments? What was that 'bout me having something against English? :D

Mebbe Top Shot will accomplish one thing for the the general public-point out that one should look beyond the press releases...

I always laugh at the opening of the show where the narrator states something 'bout them being one of history's top shots-mebbe he should change that to one of History Channel's Top Shots!?

basicblur, Methinks it is rapidly becoming more clear who is taking himself too seriously. You know, maybe the guy who has said two or three times "please tell no one i watch this show" as though anyone cares you watch the show.

I am starting to think you were once abused by a press release, judging by how many times you have to mention them. You may be the only one on here who has actually read a press release about this show. Mebbe.

Nice job dodging the question about the accomplishments by the way.

My bad...I should know by now not everyone gets satire...

I was under the immpression that the host of that show ( Caleb Giddings ) was out of town either covering or competing in a couple different events.

I also seem to recall that Cliff was out of the country ( Greece, maybe?? ) competing the week he got eliminated from Top Shot.

I've always been baffled by those who post repeatedly on a thread about a particular show stating their disdain for the show, and most of the characters, and all their particular reasons why over and over.

If you don't like the show, don't want anyone to 'know' you even watch the show, and just seem to want to repeatedly insult and degrade the people 'on' the show, don't you have better things to do?

I mean absolutely no offense at all.

But there are "SO" many other shows out there and oceans of other threads, not to mention 'Forums,' why camp out in this one? (This 'Thread' that is.)

I don't have a problem admitting that I like the drama, my biggest problem is that the show tends to get more drama-oriented than shooting oriented. It gets to the point where you kind of feel like it just happens to be a soap opera with a shooting competition rather than a shooting competition with a bunch of drama queens. When the actual competitions start getting stupid is when I get sick of the show--it was hard for me to pick it back up after the gattling gun and cannon episodes.

That being said I do wish they would get rid of the team aspect just because it ruins the competitive aspect of it. It's not about who is the better shooter, it's about who is better at playing politics.

I don't recall any of the people strutting around the house saying "I won such and such title, and I won such and such title" I have seen it printed under their name by the producers of Top Shot though...

So I am not sure where you get the idea that people are trumpeting their titles...Jake was the one talking about their titles...not the shooters.

If you don't like the show, don't want anyone to 'know' you even watch the show...
See earlier reference to folks not appreciating satire.

...and just seem to want to repeatedly insult and degrade the people 'on' the show...
One man's degrading is another man's jest bringing 'em down to earth a bit-mebbe it's just human nature, but it seems some want to elevate a few folks on the show to deity status...

I ran across this ditty from post 101:
Like the country sounding guy from season 2 said, you need to take all those awards and accolades with a grain of salt. My money for season three is on any of the contestants without a significant competitive resume.

Sounds like others think as I do, including the winner of season 2! :uhoh:

AFA degrading...we've already had one Bubba Jethro reference and my lack of English skills questioned, but that ain't no problem...I jest remember that old Southern saying...Iff'n you can't laugh at yourself, make fun of others...
I'm sure it eats at some folks that a "Bubba Jethro" won season 2.

..don't you have better things to do?
Don't we all?
Hey, this gives me a good chance to practice my typing and I'm catching up on the news (multitasking donchaknow), plus everyone needs a little down time/guilty pleasure once in a while.

But there are "SO" many other shows out there...
Really? I've got 500 channels and nothing to watch...which is one reason I watch Top Shot.

...there and oceans of other threads, not to mention 'Forums,' why camp out in this one? (This 'Thread' that is.)
Ain't nobody camped out-I'm bouncing between multiple forums and posts...besides, it's starting to get fun in here (please don't tell other folks I said that)!

Well I resisted the temptation to post on this thread for a LONG time, but waded in (against my better judgement) after it looked like the Dustin bashing was 'bout to start.

As other posters have shown, I'm not alone in believing this is not a 'shooting' show, but I understand that's not who the producers are targeting. As many have stated, wives, children, etc that normally wouldn't watch your usual gun show are glued to this one-ya gotta give kudos to the producers for that.

Satire that no one gets and has to be explained or repeated multiple times is extremely poor satire. Or, is it "if all else fails, claim it was satire"?

Sooo....I met Colby (the host) today at a LGS.

Pretty nice guy. Taller than I expected (he's about 6 ft).

I approached him, shook his hand and we talked about how my son and I always watch it together, and we had him sign some t-shirts for us. Gave us at least 5 min.

It was a bit funny, the person in front of us asked him who his least favorite person was this season....his response: Jake.

Knowing he wouldn't be able to tell me, I asked him if Jake wins. He smiled and said that things get interesting.

I'm looking forward to next week...

As am I.

Hmmm......'things get interesting.'

As much as that could easily be a blanket response to anything a fan asks that can't be answered, I have a feeling things are about to get 'real' interesting.

I think the Jake/Dustin standoff may very well be an inevitable outcome.

How poetic, huh?

'Good' vs. 'Evil'

If that's how this season ends, I'd probably say it'd be the most entertaining ending of Top Shot to date.

We shall soon see. Things are getting better and better despite all the annoying aspects of the 'Reality' format and this season's nuisances.

Stay tuned.

He also said that when you're selected for the show, you fly to SoCal and do a shooting test with four different firearms and do a psych eval. He said that without a doubt Jake can shoot but they never saw this coming.

I sure hope he leaves....and soon.

I think Jake gets kicked off for violating a rule. Top Shot has a Facebook page and every week asks who you think will get eliminated? Jake is always the overwhelming favorite and several weeks ago someone with a Jake profile claimed he isn't getting eliminated and is already on the green team. That's when they were split between red and blue. So depending on how far ahead production is with viewing there's a possibility that it was the real Jake who posted it.

Yesterday, Colby said that they just finished wrapping up Season 4 and it should be on Jan/Feb 2012.

He said that without a doubt Jake can shoot but they never saw this coming.

Wow. If he really said that, I'm really lookin forward to the show in a couple nights.

Wonder what the heck happens with Jake. I have such little trust for the way they spin the previews to mislead us that it's hard for me to believe he just gets kicked out or leaves.

But, who knows? Maybe so.

If so, it'll be very pleasant to watch the last few true classy sportsman battle it out for the title.
