Top shot show on History

I've only seen 'Garand thumb' when single loading the M-1 for slow fire - when reloading with an 8-round en bloc clip there's no reason to stick a digit into the action. Or am I missing something, here?

Well, you have to get the clip fully seated, and they don't just drop in. It seems that every older vet has a story about M1 thumb in some way, shape, or form.

I thought I'd be happier to see Jay go but by the time it happened, I started to have a little more respect for him and a lot less for some others. Been completely unimpressed with Ashley and I can't add anything about George that hasn't already been said. I'd love to see Jamie send George home!

Ashley's shooting has not necessarily stood out to me in competitions. But if they were to go into combat scenario, I would say he would outshoot the others with his experience.

After doing some more thinking, what was the purpose of the .50BMG challenge? Like, why did they even have it? Before, with 2 teams, you had a winning team and a losing team. Winning team is safe. Now, with 1 team, that is gone. And seeing how nobody (except the 1 person who shot at Joe's target) voted based off of how people did in the challenge, it was completely meaningless. Nobody was ever going to vote for Gunny, so his immunity was moot. Joe did terrible in the challenge, yet wasn't put in elimination. Jamie came in 2nd, and Jay didn't do terrible. They voted on who they didn't like. So the challenge was cool, but completely meaningless. With 1 team, make the challenge have meaning. You win, your safe, you come in last, you are automatically in the elimination challenge. Then you can still have people vote for the other person, which leaves that element they apparently want in the show still.

I also don't understand why they didn't combine both speed and accuracy into the challenge. There should have been like a 1-3 second penalty for every miss added to your overall score. While George is a cocky arrogant disrespectful person, he was right about one thing. This is suppose to be a challenge on marksmanship, and he was the best at it on that challenge.

Any of you guys heard of Appleseed, go to that site, search top shot. Should bring up a thread started by Jamie, while he was overseas. He is back in country at this time. Of course no show info, but he talks about the little war that he and George are having.

I found the appleseed project forum but can't seem to come up with the thread you mention using any of the obvious search criteria. If you have time could you post or PM a link? Thanks.

I agree completely, he should have won based on accuracy not on time, that was pretty BS competition if you ask me.

The rules should have been who can hit the target in the least amount of shots, that would have been a more legitimate test of marksmanship. This whole episode made me wonder why I'm even watching this show to begin with.

i share some of these sentiments
i find it odd the episode that has my favorite firearm of all time (m1 garand) and by the time it makes its appearance im already upset with the show
the guys that are buddying up have only taken away from what they could win
instead of being a top shot
they have won a popularity contest

Well the problem is IF they made it purely accuracy then they did not even need to have the contest. Let's look at the group...who is going to win solely on accuracy with a weapon he has used in combat?

But like many other competitions it was accuracy under a time crunch. They needed to add pressure in some manner. The clock is all they got. What I would have liked to have seen. George go LAST. With the other times, he would have had pressure to hurry up. George instead decided he did not like the rules and would do 1 shot 1 kill shooting. I was a great shot but it was not the sole focus of the competition. He ignored it because he could not get past the have to get it in 1 shot. Consider, if this had been a TRUE contest and not a popularity poll, he could have very well gotten himself eliminated.

If this is the way they are going to run the rest of this show, I am not going to be watching any longer. I know they need their drama edge to keep some viewers their. However, they took it so far the last episode that they took any semblance of competition out of it. They could have saved us all 60 minutes by just starting out with the elimination round because that was the only way this episode was going to go.

same here, I searched "Top Shot" and "George Reinas" adn could not find it

Here is the write up from Jamie

Thanks very much for all the continued support. I was especially proud of my showing with the 1911, and the Razorcat Race Gun. Not too shabby with the compound bow, and the tomahawk, either!

All of the drama between George and I is a little bit rediculous, and a little out of proportion, I think. All of us on the Red Team got along great 95% of the time, and were always respectful and friendly with each other. Me and Gunny, and Me and Chris Reed especially got along well. The editors have to cram 72 hours into 43 mintues of air time, and they cut it to create the atmosphere that they want to portray. At one point the producers told us that we were making them sick because we were all getting along so well, and not trash talking enough.

None of the competition or contestant interaction is scrpited. The only things that were scripted were some of the promo stuff we did for History (that I haven't seen aired yet).

Although nothing was scripted, sometimes during our interviews they would try to steer you towards something that they wanted you to say. For example: there were many interviews where they tried to get me to talk trash about George, and tried to steer me towards saying that he was singling me out, and picking on me, and that I was sick of it, etc.

I never wanted to say those things because - #1: I didn't want to sound like I was whining and crying, #2: I guess I'm incredibly naive because George and I got along pretty well 90% of the time. There was no way I could have known about him talking so much crap behind closed doors... I actually went so far as to defend George a few times when they (the producers) were trying to get me to call him out.

I didn't dislike George, and tried to be his friend, and we still keep in touch a little bit through FaceBook. George does have the skills to pay the bills when it comes to long range shooting, and there is A TON that I would like to learn from him. He definitely knows what he's doing and what he's talking about. His career field is Military Police, and he is qualified as a USAF Security Forces Counter-Sniper.
*BUT* he has attended the Army Sniper School (Bravo-4), and the USMC Scout Sniper Course, in addition to several Law Enforcement SWAT Sniper / Counter-Sniper courses. He has won numerous sniper competitons in the U.S. including the all-military "Top Sniper" competition in 2009. To win that competition he (and his spotter) made an 1800 yard shot on the first attempt. There are not many people in the whole world that could hit a man-sized target at 1800 yards with 1 shot.

I really tried as hard as I could to stay above the drama, and I wanted to represent THE ENTIRE US Navy with honor and integrity. It wasn't my goal to make friends, but I certainly didn't want to make enemies either. I was having fun, trying to shoot well, trying to be a stand-up guy, and make the most out of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I knew there was something underhanded and dirty going on as soon as Ashley said sorry Joe and then shot jamie's target to go to elimination. I will no longer watch this show.

I'm sure the producer called central casting and asked for the biggest Dbag tool they could find and they sent George right down - lol

"Class"

+1 bout sums it up

I agree. I wonder what George says about all of this? I looked for any posts of his and found that he has Jay Lim listed on his facebook as one of his favorite athletes. That's not the vibe I got from the show at all.

In either case, it's way too much emphasis on the "reality tv" aspect and not enough on actual shooting... IMHO.

I'm not a big fan of the way that they're portraying the military in the show either. I say "good for Jamie" for trying to stay above it.

Can someone enlighten me as to how much combat Air Force Security Forces see? Cuz the only AF people I've ever seen outside of a nice big air base (like Balad) were combat controllers and EOD.

I'd like to hear some of George's war stories. I wonder if they start off with "No joke, there I was. Knee deep in supplements at the gym in Balad" :neener:

Nothing against those who have jobs that keep them inside the wire - but I do have something against those who don't leave the wire and then get home to tell stories about how they saved the world/team/squad/platoon/company from being overrun by AQIZ.

From Jamie's post, it sounds like he's really got his head on straight. Good for him. As to the drama on the show, Top Shot is designed to get the best ratings it can. And I'm sure they've got experts producing the show that have a lot of experience in what the show needs to contain to get people to talk about it and tune in to see what happens.

The show is not designed to appeal solely to gun/marksman afficianados like us TheHighRoad.org freaks (I mean 'freaks in the nicest possible way ).

Bottom line: They want people to tune in, talk about the show, tell others, and tune in again.

And I think that's happening. Even on here, we're talking about it - a lot. Even if we don't like what happened, we talk about it - sometimes beCAUSE we don't like what happened.

Regardless, most of us will tune in again, because we've now got to see what happen. We'll be rooting for Chris Reed or against George -- but we'll be watching. At least I'll be. I'm enjoying the heck out of the show.

The show is called Top Shot, but it's really about Top Ratings. Thus the sets, the drama, the teams, the nomination range, the elimination challenges, etc., etc., etc. Otherwise, they'd just be televising the Olympic shooting trials.

That's pretty funny!

I wonder what George says about all of this?

On his facebook fan page he keeps saying that you don't see what's going on and that he'll explain everything when the show's over.

I hope so - he definitely seems like quite the DB now. I think it will be hard to explain some of his comments away though. Maybe he is a good guy, but he seems like a dirtbag now.

This is going to sound really lame, but this all shows how usually, less is more. Better to keep your mouth shut and not to speak badly of others to someone whom it is likely or even just possible for it to be repeated...say a camera crew of a reality show or something. For all anyone knows or ever really will know, George could be a great guy who is a bit naive and easily influenced to play in popularity contests (i.e. he is young and not all that wise to Hollywood games -- drama, that is...not skills).

Jamie was obviously smart not to take the bait of the producers. He obviously has more fans than poor George.

It's all entertainment guys... These guys have to appear to be jerks, if everyone was nice to each other and got along, no one but us gun guys would watch it!

Folks, just remember that the central theme to shows like these is MANIPULATION.

The show wants to manipulate the characters, the drama, the audience, and ultimately your wallet.

Ain't nothing but a thing.

I'd like to see how Jamie does.

I suspect the in-fighting will shortly ensue.

Reminds me of Ranger school when we had to vote for someone to drop.

does anyone watch the show axemen on history? they do the same horrible drama stuff on there too its insane sometimes

Radio interview with Jay Lim

Host: Caleb Giddings (Top Shot Blue team season 1)

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts/2011/04/08/gun-nuts-radio-jay-lim-from-top-shot-reloaded

Some highlights (paraphrasing):

What may have went on between Jamie and George (and the other military shooters): His understanding was Jamie wasn't clear talking about his job and the others may have misinterpreted him.

Why Jay didn't change his grip: A great deal of information was edited out. He did try the new grip and sought out advice but couldn't hit anything. He and the others (including Chris T) agreed that he should go back to his old style. Later on after Top Shot he found out through Chris T. what he was doing wrong. He no longer shoots teacup and saucer.

Voting in the individual competitions took the sails out from him. He no longer felt shooting had much bearing on the outcome. He mentioned that he failed to prepare mentally for the M1 Garand challenge. Several aspects affected him; he felt he would be right back in the elimination round regardless of how he did, and he was missing his family. He felt the other contestants were better able to handle this. He did little preparation as compared to previous challenges.

He did not know the times of the others including himself in the Barrett challenge. Apparently none of the other contestants knew. There was an assumption that he did worse than everyone except Joe. Also, shooting first or last didn't matter to him in this challenge.

Looking back he said he should have blasted more rounds out of the Barrett because it was a fun weapon to shoot. If he had one contestant he would have liked to compete against one-on-one from Season One, it would have been Kelly Blanchard.

I apologize in advance if I did not catch everything accurately.

I still gotta wonder if sending all 10 rounds downrange with the Barrett as fast as you could pull the trigger would have pulled out the fastest time (since it was a timed event).

Spray and pray with a .50 sounds like fun if nothing else.
